1632 Austria 1/4 Taler - Super Luster & Color

12 posts in this topic

While I usually shy away from smaller coins for my collection, this one really jumped out at me. It's a 1632 Austrian 1/4 Taler minted in Hall. It's bigger than a US quarter, but smaller than a half.

Features the Duke in armor holding a scepter and sword on the obverse and the single-headed crowned eagle on the reverse.

The coin appears to be Choice BU with a wonderful light blue, green, and gold toning.

Listed in Krause as a 60K instead of 1/4T, KM-590, with no price in Unc, but $350 in EF.

It's off to NGC where the graders will all gather around in amazement that such an old coin is in such super condition...or they'll give it a 4 second look and move on to the other coins in the box. confused-smiley-013.gif

I thought it was 5 seconds? stooges.gif

Great looking coin. Has to be quite rare in that condition with such nice toning.

I've only see a few of these, but they were in rather nice condition. I'm guessing a hoard of them was found. I'm going to be very interested to see what it grades. I should have the results this Friday.

The picture is the sellers. I didn't have time to image it. I saw it and then it went off to NGC ASAP. Hopefully I'll have the grade today. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif If not, Monday at the latest.

We used to get BU rolls of them at my grandpappy's store. They were a lot better struck than yours, though. stooges.gif

frown.gif That's OK. We all can't be old enough to have seen these in circulation.

BTW, you collect Canadian coins. I just found an 1891 Large Cent lying around. It was the Small Date, Large Leaves variety. I drilled a hole in it and used it as a washer. No idea where it came from.

See? There IS something good about being old.

Congrats on the 65! 893applaud-thumb.gif

I'm sending Guido and Luigi over to get payment on my Canadian cent.
