using the same name on Ebay and Here... it was bound to happen

The PM I got was a member of this board asking if I had bid on a coin he was selling. It's not likely that I woudl out-bid a member of this board as I try not to over-bid on stuff.

Generally, if someone on the boards says they are bidding on a specific coin, everyone else backs off and doesn’t bid at all. There are enough coins out there for everyone, no reason to drive up the price on one another. I’m sure that some have an alternate Ebay name and bid against other board members incognito, but I like to think that is a rare occurrence and not a common practice.

On the other hand, if no board member has laid claim for bidding rights and two board members or more are going after a specific coin, then the highest bid wins.

Maybe this is a naïve way of looking at things - but I believe there is still common courtesy being practiced here.

As a side note I think it is best to be quiet if you happen across a coin that you want to bid on. There are a lot of people lurking. I think some might be watching just to pounce on a coin that the experts here have deemed bid-worthy.

I'm not certain how true this statement is. No doubt, some folks might back away from a coin they want simply because someone else has already placed a bid or expressed the desire to do so. However, if there is a coin I am really after and it is in auction then I don't care who else is interested, I will bid what the coin is worth to me.

I don't know that your scenario is common courtesy. In fact, I would bet that some sellers might view it as collusion.

I agree with this completely!

893scratchchin-thumb.gif Tom, you bring up some good points. Having never been a seller myself I never looked at auctions that way.

So as usual please ignore my previous post wink.gif

EXCEPT the part about keeping the coins you are bidding a secret!
