I got these at the MidAmerica show. I was going to post them in the "Post your new purchases thread," but it crashed my browser when I opened it Christo_pull_hair.gif

You can tell I took a couple of these pictures myself blush.gif

Feel free to guess grades if you like smile.gif

From Greg Allen/foodude. I've gotten an awesome proof Franklin from him each of the past two years.

From Tassa/Jade. This one really rocks! Very nice surfaces.

From Andy Skrabalak. I don't know why the bottom of the reverse is yellow. This thing is a frosty headlight.

I've got three nice SLQ's now. I want more laugh.gif

I am very happy with all my purchases. I may have spread myself a little thin, but they're all series that I want to do and that I already have several nice pieces in. It's going to be a long road, but hopefully I have plenty of time smile.gif

I really like the 1935-S Peace dollar, that's a real smoker! thumbsup2.gif The 1927-D SLQ has also always been one of my favorite dates in that series. Nice haul! smile.gif

Here are my uneducated guesses:

Franklin PR-68 DCAM (or UCAM or whatever)

Lincoln MS-66 RB

SLQ MS-65 (me likey)

WLH MS-65

Peace MS-66

Saint, to me it's a 62 or 63 with a weak strike, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it in a 64 holder (depending on who's holder it is). Anything higher than a 64 really would surprise me.

I like the reverse a lot, but the obverse it the real limiting factor for me. The strike is unusually weak. Hard to tell from the photo how the luster is, but in any case I stand by my original assessment. I can't wait to see the answers to the quiz!

I also really like the way the reverse has toned. The obverse has picked this up to some extent. It is a coin I would be glad to have in my collection thumbsup2.gif

OK, here's the grades.

Franklin: NCG 69CAM...despite how my lame photo may look, the thing is totally pristine.

Lincoln: PCGS 66RB....Just really nice smooth surfaces, not all die polish-y with shiny spots, etc.

SLQ: PCGS 65...I really wish I could take coin pics. This coin is so brilliant and frosty. Any marks on the coin amount to just a couple light frost breaks, no real dinks at all.

WLH: PCGS 67...brilliant, clean fields and devices. You have to seriously scrutinize the coin to find the tiniest mark. Fully lustrous and then some.

Peace: PCGS 66...100% uniformly smooth frosty surfaces. Very clean. Hard to put down when you start looking at it. The picture really captures the essence of the coin.

Saint: PCGS 65... This coin is no weaker a strike that most 1922's are. What makes it so unique is the translucent orange skin that is 100% intact. You can see hints of green/gold shimmer underneath the surface. The fields are 99% flawless. The coin is pedigreed to the J. Brahin and Steve Duckor collections. These are top sets and you can bet that any coin that comes from either is very PQ for the grade. I have personally seen all the coins from the former set and each coin was prettier than the previous one. 64's looked like 65's , 65's like 66's. I was very lucky to score this one. The truth is that with these coins, a picture can only show so much. They can flatter a bad coin or make a great coin look ragged. But it's a very nice MS65.

Thanks for the guesses. Sorry, no prizes this time grin.gif

This is why it's so hard to grade from photos, since it's impossible to see the play of light on the coins surfaces and the quality of the luster. Plus with gold it's always difficult as photos of any size tend to really amplify any surface imperfections (like some of the minor hits on the obverse). The Duckor collection was phenomenal, and with his eye for quality I will blame it all on the photos!

I also want to give "shout-out" to Jay Brahin (saintguru), who has been my mentor in this area. He's got a great eye for coins, and has an awesome set. He's really helped me to understand what gold is supposed to look like. Now my Saint collection has grown to two coins, and with his counsel should be complete in about another 4000 years tonofbricks.gif
