what causes this?

I got this 1999 Deleware quarter in change today, and I`m curious to know what causes this copper coloring all the way through the coin? Is it in the layering? I know I`m probably about to get hammered by all you "DAMAGE" experts! But the coloring goes all the way through to the other side of the coin in the same spots.

It could be the layering, could be damage, could be improper mix of the alloys... Who knows.

What exactly do you mean by the Halo? If you mean the glow around the coin... it was my camera in poor lighting.
