Any Russian Coinage experts around?

8 posts in this topic

I recently saw a print ad for NCS. In the ad they show a Russia 1756CNB 10R that they have slabbed because of an improper cleaning and it is scratched. It is AU Details. I assume it was sold in an auction. The price being $16,800. Besides being old, what would make this coin sell for over $16K. I know nothing about Russian coinage. confused-smiley-013.gif Thanks.

Yeow, I would still like to know something more about this particular coin just for fun. Now we have the same coin in a NGC MS63 holder getting close to $25K...You're right SilverEagles95, why did the seller pick eBay. With the ANA coming up in August, there a several well watched auctions that would have done very well with it.

The final value fee for this auction were actually much less than dealing with the major auction houses, probably about a third of what I have been charged at other places. I personally didn't feel that it would bring much more at a "normal" auction, maybe it would, really not sure, but they always look better with the 15% bp.

As for more about the early 10 rouble, I'm really not sure why they are so high, Krause doesn't list them very high at all (compared to what they now bring). I guess Krause might be wrong for the first time. smile.gif With cleaned one in the ncs holder I have no idea what to think, maybe the collections pedigree??

Check out the bidder's list. Also, some of the ME pages show those bidding know the coin's worth. The next time I sign on to eBay I'm going to send the seller a note and ask for a couple tidbits of info. Better yet, I am going to

www.coinsheetlinks.com and see what I can find out. I know I've seen a couple dealers on there that specialize in Russian coinage.

Well, I've struck out. The sites that I found that have Russian coins will have a bunch listed in date order. But when it comes to 1756, it is passed over! I think it's time for me to ask the eBay seller.

I do know something about Russian coins, having collected them for over 20 years, but I am still surprised by these prices. I have also dealt with the guy who bought the piece on the eBay auction, and know that he's no fool. 10 rouble pieces of this vintage are scarce, yes, but not especially so, and I can't see anything about the piece to excite so much interest. Furthermore, from the eBay picures it looks to me that there's a chance that the piece was once mounted, and MS63 is too high - the coin has a little wear. I think the answer is that there is an awful lot of money chasing a small pool of coins, and gold 10-rouble pieces are the highest denomination of this period, so it is - to a degree - a trophy coin.

Unfortunately I don't have any...
