Update $14 Ebay Indian.

12 posts in this topic

I plucked this little jewel off of Ebay for 14 bucks, on a bad photo. There was enough there to believe the coin had some redeeming qualities. The color is just outstanding on this. I had a hard time capturing it, but I think you get the idea. Now for the 20 dollar question to you toner guys. NT or AT? With the uderlying brown, I have to believe NT. Allthough a common date, this is one of the prettiest business strike Indians I've come across.

Just looking at the photos, it looks to me to be an AT proof. I am anything but an expert, so obviously this is IMHO and I will sit back and watch what the experts say. In any event, that's a neat coin for $14 regardless of what it is...Mike

I'm with Maul here.

Good-looking coin appears to be NT. (BUT I'm new at this)

I've seen pinks and blues just like that on this series right

here on this board.

I wasn't going to guess but...I just finished a chapter on toning in "Grading Mint State U.S. Coins - an ANA Correspondence Course." In their book they have an Indian cent that looks a lot like yours. They describe it as follows:

"The 1901 Indian cent below was stored in paper. It has dark patches on the rim, along with blues and reds in the interior. Along the rim, where the coin touched the paper, there is heavy oxidation."

So soley based on this, I will guess NT.

Thanks for all of the comments. For those of you that collect toned coins, is this a type of toning that is sought after, and does it command any kind of premium. I've scored some decent common date and semi-key date Indians off of Ebay, but consideringthe price of only 14 bucks and what I consider to be quite pleasing toning; This is one of my favorite Ebay scores to date.

Yes, toning like this commands a premium.

On proofs it can regularly be 2X-3X the value of a non-toned coin.

MS coins are much different. You don't see nearly as many toned ones, but the demand isn't there yet. I've sold a few toned MS ones and they brought maybe a 50% premium.
