Can you guys tell my anything about these 2 coins? I'm thinking about buying one of each from my local shop, one NCS AG details Corroded, and the other NGC AU58. He's only asking around $20. Worth the price?

I saw that auciton and thought the price was cheap. The Austrian coin catalogs for $10 in UNC and $3 in XF. A true auction it would likely bring in the $10-$12 range. I'll bet its nice, otherwise no one would certify it.

The half penny catalogs for $14 in VG, a low grde damaged one is probably worth a couple of bucks with maybe a few more for the "old and holdered" coolness factor.

Overall these are more the things that might pique some interest in world coins rather than the examples that would remain in a nice collection. The do have a neat historical cachet but nicer ones can be found with a little hunting.

Well, I think that the half penny got me hooked on "old and holdered" coins. I'm scowering the internet now, buying what I can afford, and drooling over what I can't. Darn budgets!

I got the coins today, but there was no Austria coin. He substituted for a 1971 S PR68 * nickel. Do you think that was an acceptable substitution? I mostly collect US coins, so I'm happy either way. Where should I find the date on the Great Britain coin? Is there one? I can't find it anywhere...

Well, if you paid for an Austrian coin, and you did not recieve that austrian coin, then no, I do not think that is an appropriate substitution.

Hey Chad,

Any chance of seeing pictures of your latest buy? flowerred.gif

Old coins have always fascintated me,even a classic or modern coin with a beautiful strong design just can't beat a nearly 500 year old coin when it comes to character. The oldest dated coin I have right now is Mexican 1783 1/2 reale,I think it's neat considering that it might have found it's way up north and circulated during the the late 1700's.One of my favorite coins was a 1619 spanish copper piece,8 marvedies, spelled somewhat like that. It was crude compared to modern standards, and it might have been hammered although I guess those roll presses they had might have produced the same look?I remember that it had a lion on the front and a castle on the back.It wasn't worth much but it was so cool to have an old coin like with details you could see and an actual date. I sure regret selling that piece. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Well we all know that my photography skills are lass than up to par, and my shotty camera doesn't help much. The date isn't readable, except for the last digit. The obverse is VG+, but the reverse is definitely AG. Some verdigris still on the reverse. I'll try to get a picture for you Hayden.
