I'm not so sure about the doubling either. Something is ghosty!! I like the coin. It has some great character, toning and eye appeal. A terrific Morgan IMHO. Regards, Rick.

How did it grade?

I'm thinking MS 64. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Old ANACS 65...I bought it because of all the Die Clashes...I am not sure if it is a VAM.

I didn't miss all of them I just tried to highlight the ones that I couldn't get with a head on shot. Both sides of the wreath have clashes.

One coming straight down from the n Of In God We Trust.

There is also one, albeit faint, under Ms. Morgans neck.

There is just So much going on with this coin I couldn't let it pass.

Oh and a die crack in the neck behind the spike.

I have never seen a crack like this before.

As well as 3 (What I have heard called comets or shooting star) die gouges over the third star right side of the date.

I couldn't get those in the picture.

Nice one, MAUL! There were 12.29 million of the 1883-P struck. Since it is fairly common, be sure to look for others with more of the facial outline. Also, be sure to check them carefully for clashed lettering from IGWT and LIBERTY. Clashed lettering is harder to come by and is more collectible. The "spike" in the neck is the "marker" that may indicate more clashes. It's the easiest to spot. It is possible to find them "raw" because many dealers take them for granted. Now, if you want to find a mate for it, be on the lookout for the 1888-P with the same die clashes plus! The facial outline on the reverse inside the lefthand wreath is nearly complete and is sometimes doubled.

Ordinarily, your specimen would be considered a VAM 13 because the "83" of the date is higher above the rim. I don't know if any of the VAM 13's have been attributed with the die clashes. You'd have to check the updates or submit it to Leroy Van Allen for verification. He charges $5 + return shipping & insurance for this service. If it is a new variety, he will waive the $5.
