Found some VAMs on eBay... Can some VAM enthusiasts help me out?

55 posts in this topic

I found a few VAM morgans on eBay. The cheapest one I saw was a "Barwing" variety. It's got a raised thing of metal under the "N" in "In God We Trust." I was wondering, is this a common vam? Does it command a hefty premium over a regular morgan of the same date? This one happens to be ANACS EF40 1889 VAM-22. Now mind you, I'm not trying to start a set here, merely trying to have an example for my collection. They also had about a VG-8 Hotlips morgan raw for $50.

I can't help you with individual VAMs, however, I can tell you that every Morgan and Peace dollar die pair has a VAM designation. Therefore, each piece you have is a VAM, you just have to determine the one that it is.

The VAM book is actually two books, I believe, and I think they run at least $85 in used condition. Please note I could be entirely wrong about the price on this. In my opinion, if you want to know the VAM designation on a dollar you might do well to buy one that is certified with the VAM designation on the holder, send one in for certification and pay the extra few dollars for variety attribution or enlist the help of a VAM afficianado who might be willing to attribute a coin or two for you that you already own. Good luck.

By the way, I don't own the VAM book and have no use for it as I do not collect dollars by die pairing.

Ooh cool! Should I buy the VAM book to do this? Is it really a worthwhile book to have?

YES! It's worth every penny plus some. It will become your Bible of collecting Morgans if you purchase one. Just be prepared: You will spend hours looking at your Morgans and reading the book to find your specific VAM..LOLOL yay.gif

I don't collect them by any means, I merely wanted to have a certified VAM example for my collection. In that kind of price range, I think I'll hold off unless I become deeply consumed in the VAM section of the silver dollar hobby.

Here's some pics of the coin. Tell me what you think. You can clearly see the variety on the left wing. The little lump of stuff below the N in In God We Trust.

You say you got those photos with a $20 microscope? Where might I get one? I was thinking of getting the one like Hays has, but I figured that I wouldn't use it enough to justify that kind of pricetag...

You'd be surprised what a little $20 "Intel Play" microscope will find on a Morgan dollar! 27_laughing.gif

I don’t mean to get off topic and I promise not to hijack this thread but

you mentioned using an Intel Play microscope. I started a thread about

digital microscopes in the Tangents area so this caught my attention. The

Intel Play QX 3 is the predecessor of the Digital Blue QX 5 that I was raving

about. The Intel Play you spoke of – is it the QX 3? (for all I know there might

be other versions) If so, how well does work? I had heard that the QX 3

couldn’t bring into focus anything greater than the 10X setting. Yours seems

to take a nice pic on the 60X setting.

Chad, if it is the QX 3, you can get them on ebay.

IT is QX3. I looked, and the used ones are $20, but brand new cheapest was twice that + shipping. Will I ever find what I need????

I would do a search for reviews on both models if I were you. He may have

lucked out and got a good QX 3, but I read they had trouble focusing. For only

a few bucks more you can get the latest version. Just a thought.

I would really LOVE to have the QX 5, but I could get a very nice coin for that price. Maybe I'll just hold out on my photography for now..

True.

You know, if the seller has a good return policy it might be worth trying

out the QX 3. I COMPLETELY understand about wanting to keep your

cost down! thumbsup2.gif
