1911-D

25 posts in this topic

Back in the end of May I posted asking about PCGS grading a 1911-D 2.50 as a 1911-P 2.50. I asked for input because I am not an expert in this area of grading. Some said I was trolling others made fun and said i should get a book because I didn't know the difference between the two yadayadyada. After much worry PCGS sent me back my graded 1911-D 2.50 in the correct holder. Just wanted to let you know.

Sweet coin! What did it grade? I would like to see a picture as well. As a side note I think those people who you thought were making fun of you were indeed not, but they were merely trying to help you. Stick around you will enjoy it here. I do remember the post, but since gold is not my area of knowledge I left it alone.

So, you're saying that PCGS didn't send you a different coin (as your first post asked), but sent you the right coin in a mislabeled slab? And when you sent the coin back, they corrected the label and returned the coin to you?

What about the "mintmark" you asked about that might have been covered by the gasket? Was it, in fact, a mintmark?

Hi David – I’m glad that it worked out for you. Could you let us know how you managed to get things square with PCGS? Also, I’m a little confused . . . how is the $2.5 in the ANACS holder related to the problem that was the subject of your original post?

I'm confused, are you saying PCGS sent you the correct coin labeled wrong and you sent it back and they corrected the label???

Or they just sent you a different coin??

I would hope you didn't spend that much money on a coin, not even know where the mint mark was, send it to PCGS, get the same coin back and not even know it was the same coin.

Read a book. It'll save you alot of money and you won't look like such a fool.

You don't think the graders across the street removed the D, well you know, just for a joke. 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif

I can't figure out who did what on this one. I am begining to think this whole story smells like a big joke. First of all, i've never known ANYONE to buy a $5000+ coin and not even know where the mint mark was on the coin. Second, i've never known anyone buy a $5000+ coin and think the grading service sent them back a different coin. Third, i can't even figure out what he just posted about the coin!

I can tell you this, if it was a mechanical error, there is NO way he sent it to them and got it back within 2 weeks unless he paid $100 for express service.

You know dude I don't know what caused this post but we on this side of the street enjoy the civility of these boards and I personally would hope that when you achieve your tenth post it would be to offer something constructive and a little more mature.

If you have a problem with someone here you might want to take it to a PM.

It may have been just a misunderstanding that could have been resolved without making yourself look foolish and earned the disdain of some of the contributing members.

You know dude I don't know what caused this post . . . .

Dave might have felt that Excaliber was unnecessarily rough in this thread. Tough start for you Dave, but you shouldn't let it dissuade you from participating.

I've read all three of the threads that this user started in real time and have noticed that the only place this user ever posted on these boards was within those threads. Therefore, now that this matter seems to be satisfactorily resolved, I doubt we will ever see this user again. Unless, of course, he or she has another problem and approaches the board for help.

I know where the D is on a 2.50 indian. When it originally came back the rubber gasket which holds the coin in place covered the mintmark thus it couldn't be seen clearly by the verifying grader. I spoke with someone at the company who assured me that they were pretty positive it was a 1911 2.50. They agreed to look at it for free and send it back to me which they did. They recognized that they had made an error and sent it back with a corrected label. Not having much experience with grading services I thought the worse and came to this forum looking for some guidance in what to do. I received some help and some dumb comments. Par for the course I suppose.

Thats great to hear it all worked out in the end. I don't think anybody was out to get you in the beginning, but you also have to look at the flip side of the coin. Here comes a relative new comer to the boards, claiming PCGS, screwed him and such. It could very well happen, as mistakes do happen, but in any case it is rare, and around here people just don't believe any person that just strolls onto these boards. Being here about 3 years I can say alot of people come out of the woodwork take shots, and never return. Credibility is earned here, which it should be. Now with that being said I hope you stick around and enjoy coins with us. Got a picture of the coin?
