Suggestion for a posting series - "Coin Cabinet"

8 posts in this topic

(Please excuse my early post, which I inadvertently submitted too soon.)

In the spirit of the What You Need to Know posting series, I'd like to suggest another series and see what everyone thought about it. I'd term it the "Coin Cabinet" series, and I envision it as a sort of specialised WYNTK. It would basically be a WYNTK focusing only on one particular coin series at a time. Currently, the WYNTK posts offer a variety of collecting related topics (e.g.''AT vs. NT', 'terminology', 'grading', etc) as well as topics focused on a particular coin series. This makes the latter type of WYNTK topic somewhat infrequent and sporatic. I envision the Coin Cabinet posting series as offering a more regularly-released and more focused set of postings. I am curious as to whether the board members would welcome a more specific and more regularly-posted series such as I describe below.

Each posting would be written about a specific series of coin (e.g. "Coin Cabinet: Buffalo Nickels (1913-1938)" or "Coin Cabinet: Peace Dollars (1921-1935)") and would be by the resident board expert on the series. The author could discuss as many aspects of collecting that series as they wanted to, with the goal of educating those of us who don't collect that series. Topics could include major/minor varieties, what's considered a complete set, hints on grading, photos, toning in that series, and so on. Once posted, the Coin Cabinet postings could be commented on and/or corrected by readers and once the discussion is at an end, they could be archived in another forum for future review.

If anyone is interested in authoring postings in such a series, let's discuss it below. We can come to a concensus on frequency, who wants to write what, etc. I'm still learning a lot about numismatics and this seems like an interesting way to learn more about coins outside of my normal area of collecting interest. I hope many of you agree with me that this could be a fun way to educate each other about the coins we specialize in.

I already wrote on the only series I really know well for the WYNTK post, but feel free to place it in this new category if people think it would be useful. Personally I like the idea of being able to jump to a topic for specific information on a series that interest me.

A great idea...some of the long time collectors could really help out us newbies with in depth postings on different series...I would like to see a post on standing liberty quarters...scr
