1832 Bust Half… Beware: High drool factor

Here’s a coin I’d love to put into my type set, but it’s one grade and hundreds, err thousands of bucks over my means. confused-smiley-013.gif

Cool coin but I would wager that it has been dipped and allowed to re-tone in an album. The white is to bright for a hundred and seventy four year old coin to be natural.

Unfortunately, I will have to agree with Michael and chinook on this one.

Yes, very unfortunate, if this coin was in an AU58 holder I could afford it. foreheadslap.gif

This coin was never given any thought by me to purchase, it’s just an example that has a few of the things that catch my eye in Bust Halves and would like to see on the coin that I do find some day for my type set.

I don’t see many Bust Halves with fully struck stars; this coin has all of the stars looking very sharp, actually well detailed strike on the sides. The strong well centered strike and those stars are a lot of what I liked about this coin. I also feel that regardless of what the history of coin and how it may have been handled; coins that aren’t washed out from dipping and are toned like this one work for me, I think this coin does have good eye appeal.

Any way if I was considering buying what would be a major score for my type set, 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

it’s good to know what knowledgeable and keen eyes are here and willing to take a look see for you. thumbsup2.gifthumbsup2.gif

BTW:

Am I correct in that what you guys are seeing in this coin is that it has some wear not weakness on the highest spots, like the flat area on the cheek to the right of the nose?

You will find this coin in an AU58-MS61,62 and maybe 63 holder that is affordable to you, probably. These Bust halves, and in my opinion (which could be entirely worthless) the later Bust halve 1833,34,35,36 are struck better due to design changes and if your patient to week through TONS of crappy looking ones - and hell, there are crappy looking MS64s,65s for these years- you will eventually find one with just enough rub to put it into the AU58 or early MS categories with zuper duper luster, it's like the coin was brand new. Like who the hell cares. You''l find one (just dont find it before me...ok????)

My primary reservation on this coin is simply the habit of the TPGs to put coins like this (very light in color with some apparent luster) into MS63 and MS64 holders even though they have, in my opinion, wear on them. My knee jerk reaction is to stay away from these pieces in this grade range unless the patina is thick, seemingly original and the coin is well struck.
