'81 S Morgan, 76 Ike

This might be in the wrong forum, but here goes. Now before you say "get what you like" I want your opinions on what you would do. Someone offered me an 1881 S Morgan dollar in MS 61 DPL in the old style NGC holder, and a 1976 S Type 2 Ike in PF69UCAM Clad for my 2005 $5 gold (raw). Now, what would you do? That seems just about fair, isn't it?

Figure $35 each for the '81 Morgan and the same for the '76 Type 2 Ike. Does the Morgan have a lot of bag marks? Is it an attractive or ugly coin? Normally a grade of 61 barks like a dog to me, especially sight unseen. The Ike sounds great. Both are valued around $35.00.

As an investor, neither of these two coins are particularly rare so they will not appreciate much over time. Gold is climbing and may continue to do so. That's what I would consider in evaluating the trade you suggest.

I've asked the guy to take a picture of the Morgan, so we shall see how it goes.

I'm building a collection of DMPL Morgans, so I'd like to see a photo of the '81 S.

He's sending it out on approval today, maybe I can take a picture when it gets here.

The 1881 S Morgan is as common as they come. Really I'm surprised anyone spent a penny to grade such banged up junk as a MS-61. It should have been mellted when silver was $50. Why on earth would you even consider trading a nice gold coin for a common unattractive coin? If you want to get rid of the gold, sell it. Then buy a nice 80S or 81S type Morgan in at least MS-64 or an nice IKE if that's what you want. confused.gif

How do you know it's banged up? How can you be so sure it's junk? And he's sending me both coins, not just the 1881.

You'll be amazed at how beaten-up a 61 Morgan can look. But for your sake, I hope you like the coin.

well as I said, he's sending them on approval so If I don't like them I can just send them back.

Let us know what happens - post some pics if you can.

Believe it or not, many AU coins can end up looking better than 60-63 graded coins.Unc. Morgans could get tossed around in mint bags for years before they were opened, whereas an AU coin might have had a little rub with no contact marks.

Hey, Bill! Lighten up a bit. He's asking because he's trying to learn. Besides, most DMPL's happen to be in the 61-64 range and, personally, I like the mirrors. They come in handy when I'm shaving.

Sounds like a bad deal, Chad. I'd pass.

Keep the gold on this one. An MS61 anything is either an AU coin in an MS holder or is truly beaten up. The 1881-S is the generic Morgan dollar with literally tens of thousands certified by NGC and PCGS in the MS grades. Also, DMPL Morgans show all the marks and the coin may look quite nasty because of this. In my opinion, the Ike is worth nothing and is filler.

Coins came today. Here's a picture of the 81S Morgan. It's got some deep blue and purple toning from about 10:00 to 2:00. Um ok the pic thing isn't working right now so I'll try again in a few.

Yay it worked! Now for the reverse...

My analysis of the reverse: it is a Morgan dollar.

Less blurry, please?

I tried, but for some reason the photo gods weren't with me while shooting the reverse like they were with the obverse. It's an 1881S, nice light brown toning around the circumference on the reverse.

Older NGC holder... Looks ok for MS61 PL... Can't tell too much from the pics... in time you will learn how to take better pics, I started out with scans now look at where I am... Alot further... Nice coin congrats...

Well, it's your collection. You've got to make choices that make YOU happy, regardless of what anyone says.

But I personally don't think it was a fair trade. You could unload the gold bullion and get a much better coin for the money.

The coin looks 100x better in hand. Also, I am starting to piece together a bicentennial coin collection... So the 76 Ike helped that along. I immediately fell in love with the Morgan, regardless if I could get a better one.
