1871 German Bavaria "Victory Over France" Taler

8 posts in this topic

At the conclusion of the Franco-Prussian war, Germany issued five Victory Talers dated 1871. The German States that issued them were Bavaria, Bremen, Prussia, Saxony, & Wurttemburg. I've been working on this set of 5 coins for several years. They are proving to be extremely difficult to find in gem condition. My 3rd example just recently arrived back from NGC. This is for the state of Bavaria (I've also got Saxony & Wurttemburg - both in MS65).

This example is graded MS66 (Pop 2 at NGC) and has wonderful gold, red, and blue toning on both sides.

Sloppy second is very nice, but the one that Greg posted is stunning, is that your picture JJ? If yes, you're really getting good at this.

Why everybody in the US likes so much medals and coins commemorating victories over France? TJ won't be happy and neither am I. sorry.gif

Because there are so many of them? Kinda like an early state's quarters program. poke2.gifwink.gif

I took the picture of mine and James took the picture of his. Sloppy seconds is a nice coin. These are just so hard to find nice that when you find a decent one, you can't really wait for a nicer one to come along since it may be a VERY long wait.

Oh-- nice coins, by the way.

The reverse reminds me of a Peruvian sol.

I have the opposite: the French seige 5F issued in Paris in 1870 which had a different design than the rest of the country. This was made as the German army completely surrounded Paris. However the French issued no otherwise commemorative coins of the war.

Unfortunately I guess my specimen is only an MS-63 but at least it's never been dipped!

Your Bavarian piece really is beautiful.
