A special coin honoring a tragic day...

5 posts in this topic

One of the most emotional inspiring coins in all of numismatics. Post a coin that you feel inspires great emotion...

Antietam:

"The muffled drum's sad roll has beat

The soldier's last tattoo;

No more on life's parade shall meet

That brave and fallen few."

"When we look on yon battlefield, I think of the brave men who fell in the fierce struggle of battle, and who sleep silent in their graves. Yes, many of them sleep in silence and peace within this beautiful enclosure after the earnest conflict has ceased."

Great toning on the Antietam coin. It is definitely a keeper.

My wife and I visited the Antietam battlefield last summer. We crossed Burnside Bridge and I tried to imagine what it was like on the day of battle. Such a peaceful place today; such an important site for American history. I find visitng such battlefields very humbling. They fill with me gratitude for the men who were willing to die that I may enjoy the benefits for which they labored, bled and made the ultimate sacrifice.

For me, the history behind such a commemorative adds mightily to its value. It is a small token to honor and remember those who fought on both sides.

All beautifully stated and so very true.
