Silver Eagles Turning Black in Holder

6 posts in this topic

I don't understand this. I purchased a set of 5 SE proofs multi holdered about a year ago and they are starting to turn black near the rim and it seems to be spreading. My other coins in the safe seem fine, so I don't think it's anything I'm not doing to take care of them.

Any advice?

since they are 999 fine silver and they were dipped before holdering 999 fine silver is really tempormental and this happens all of the time improper rinse combined with greed and pure silver and then sealed in a holder were the gases have no where to go is a terrible combo

presto chango

unfortunately to say

i am really sorry to hear of this problem frustrated.gif

Thanks for the news, bad though it is. Darn. Looks like they are eBay bound. frown.gif

BTW, I do have one other problem item. A copper medal I bought from the US mint still sealed in celo. It is developing green spots. Similar problem, I assume?

By multi holdered do you mean they are in an NGC Multiholder? Because if so, the grade guarantee might apply. I am not an expert, but you should check it out rather than dumping it on some poor unsuspecting ebayer.

ASEs can definitely tone in mint packaging. I've sifted through enough mountains of them to know this for a definite fact. In certified holders, I'm assuming it is also just as possible, since we all know that even 90% silver coins can turn in holders.

Indeed it is NGC. I didn't know anybody else had graded multi holders, or maybe I didn't mention they are graded. Guess I'll post on the NGC board and see how that works.

As for unsuspecting buyers, who said I was gonna misrepresent the lot?
