SPOOF ALERT: Very convincing PHISHING ATTEMPT - please read

Got this one today - pretty convincing. It pretends to be someone asking about an item you have for sale, but then, if you click the fake item number to see what the question refers to, it redirects your browser to an impersonated ebay logon screen. They phisher even goes so far as to check the credentials you type in against the real ebay, and if you put in cr&p (as I did), it correctly tells you you entered an invalid logon.

The subject of this particular PHISH attempt was:

eBay Member mvmdeane

Message from eBay Member regarding Item #5669690942

BEWARE!

I got this one as well. When I got the log -in screen, I fortunately stopped and went onto eBay to see if this was really one of my item #'s, and it wasn't. I think the best way to prevent being fooled by these emails (which I have been getting regularly) is to only respond to those that also show up in your message bin on my eBay.

ebay has a tool bar you can download that is supposed to verify if the site you're at is really ebay, by turning green. I am using it, but I don't know if it's 100% effectual. Seeing all these schemes, for now on I only read email by logging directly onto ebay and doing it that way. Maybe they've even found a way around that. I don't know.

If you copy the auction number you could just open up your own new browser and insert the item number. No need to login.

This scam isn't that new. I've received it for over a year from time to time. But knowing the item was bogus I wasn't tempted to trust it. I would also go to my real eBay page and check for messages.

I got one of those last evening on my antiques auctions (doranabc), and it wasn't quite as good as what you got.
