I pounced into so many interesting tidbits on my way to these here. I love the one article I found (1878) that noted the old-fashioned silver dollars were last minted 5 years ago (1873!). I guess Trade dollars were off the radar for consideration at the time.

 

This one is from March 20 1878 - St Louis Christian Advocate and has some cool Mint statistics. The article that follows was an amazing review of what the "good ol' days" were like...you know the 1840's and 1850's! Enjoy!!!

a great thread as it makes the coins come alive in historical context

 

makes the coins more interesting and are tangible reminders proof of this bygone era

 

and anyone can own a piece of this history
