Note to Santa Clara show promotors: One day is all you need.

I arrived at the Santa Clara show about 12:30. Doors open to dealers at 8AM. Lots of collectors hunting for coins, although the bourse was not "crowded". Many local bay area dealers and CA dealers attended, with a sprinkling of east coast dealers. Some bigger names did not attend. I noticed several AZ, and NV not in attendance. At Long Beach, a couple of noteworthy foreign dealers told me they quit the show. A few more stamp and collectibles dealers filled the ends of the bourse, moreso than usual. PCGS and NGC were taking submissions. The auction viewing went begging for clients. I was on a mission to sell a few coins. Most sold at my asking prices. I chatted with several dealers. I also perused the floor for better Mexico. I noticed at many tables, white commems, dollars, washington 25C in abundance. Surprisingly lacking were common US gold coins, along with anything bullion related. One TX dealer told me 90% of all his coins go to auction now, since his monetary returns are much better with no need to set up and less bourse work. A section of the show area had interesting antiques. Once "verboten" at this show, it seems empty tables are turning into antique sellers. Busy for most of the day, many happy faces. I left at about 4:30PM

On Saturday, I returned at 11:45AM. What a difference. Many, many dealers had left, and other dealers "spread out". There was no Sunday for this show, so I guess, east coast as well as CA dealers took advantage and "split". Retail was way down from previous shows, even for so early on Saturday. I again chatted with a few dealers, some happy, some not. I really find it hard to believe this is a bull market from some reactions. Those who relied on retail were sad, but wholesale was brisk. Some retail dealers became the wiser and decided to "wholesale" out a number of coins on Thursday. These retail dealers were better off than their "unwise" counterparts. I spoke with a retail customer who said Friday was similarly slow. Another retail buyer was happy with his "two coin" purchase. For me, I spent about 2.5 hours hunting for better Mexico, but came up empty. I literally asked all the foreign dealers, and the great majority said no better Mexico to be found. I was forced to look through a couple of "junk boxes" for glimmer of hope. All was lost. frown.gif On Thursday, one dealer told me to return Saturday, since he was buying a megadeal of monstered colored commems. Well, the megadeal turned into a megaflop. No monsters, only one semicolored Roanoke, which I purchased. tongue.gif

This show has really turned into a one day show. Everything happens Thursday. The auction really doesn't help attendance. Make this a two day show on Friday and Sat, and maybe, it will be OK. Four days is silly. The club shows in the Bay Area are really, really good, well supported and well attended by retail, which cuts into the Santa Clara show. With the lack of out of state dealers, there is no valid reason to attend four days. I am seriously planning to cut the SC show from my schedule and concentrate on a couple more Bay Area shows instead.

Overall grade D+

Grade for me selling: B

For some reason I have always done well when consigning to Superior for this show. I've heard other people say the Santa Clara show is a dead floor show.

I would say the Palm Beach show is also on its way out. Last March I was there and it was a ghost town. Then the hurricane hit. This March it was like a cementary. I think cannabalism is to blame. Just too many shows.

Two questions:

1) How is Ohio fairing after the new tax laws.

2) Which national show is the best for selling at retail?

Thx!

2) Summer ANA by far. Many foreign buyers attend as well as buyers from all over the US. I would rank a Central States and Baltimore show as second. Long Beach as third.
