Another beauty. Where have these been hiding? Anyone have any ideas why the 1804 is so much more popular?

 

The 1804 was a legitimate issue struck in 1834 for diplomatic presentation. The 1801-1803 coins more than likely were struck in the 1870 time frame when the mint was restriking 1804's. They just don't have the fame ... nor the absolute rarity .. of the 1804. Note that the 1804's have no circulation strikes of the date - the 1801-1803 have many.

These are most definitely one of the best, most esthetic designs to ever grace US coinage. To see them in such pristine, high grades is certainly a treat regardless if they are restrikes or not.

I'd like to see that coin in-hand to closely inspect for hairlines as the image seems to be picking up some distracting marks on the holder.
