For Those That Can Appreciate A Well Struck 1807 Capped Bust Half

11 posts in this topic

Hi folks, for those not familiar with this inaugural date for the Capped Bust series and first sub-type, these are very well known to have weak strikes. Particularly the eagles right wing (left wing facing). This piece is very well struck in this area along with the stars as well.

In fact, these usually come so weakly struck that just a little bit of wear will make them appear to have circulated more than they actually have (making them tough to grade). This is the 1807 Large stars O-114 and not the more common Large stars O-112 50 over inverted 5... more widely known as the 50/20 variety.

Yes I still use a scanner, but my scan depicts what it actually looks like in person, with the exception it does indeed have some luster and the surfaces are more lively. I had a hard time scanning this one and showed my old scan to a couple folks that didn't show the black crud/gunk as it truly looks. This one shows it well. Gunk is important! cool.gif I also understand a coin such as this isn't for everybody, but hopefully a few can appreciate it.

Nice original coin with lots of character. Better to have gunk than a washed out, overly dipped coin. Your example has great detail on the wing feathers which is not easy to find for this date. Thanks for sharing this great first year piece from an excellent series of American coinage!

As you know, stman, the '07-'08 subtype is also my favorite rendition for this classic series. These '07 CBHs are much tougher to find than folks realize.

1807 Capped Bust Half is my favorite year. I only wish I could afford some more AU examples. This is a nice obviously original well struck example. thumbsup2.gif

Truly a superb coin stman - one of the nicest I've seen posted since Tom's last "gunky-phlegmy" post! wink.gif

Appreciate it? Heck, I want to buy it! That's a WONDERFUL coin, and one of those kinds that a scanner does a terrific job on. This coin has it all. It is well-struck for the type, exceedingly original, just circulated enough to prove that it did it's intended job in the early days of American commerce, AND it is loaded with eye-appeal. Wish I owned it, but I'm glad it belongs to someone who appreciates what makes a coin truly special.
