Gold Eagle proofs & NGC question.

9 posts in this topic

This may be a newbie question.....The last few years I have been buying Certified Gold Eagles $50 - NGC 70 - slabbed. I also have a few older (mid 90's) $50 - proof gold eagles from the US mint. Can I send them to NGC to get certified and placed in a slab. What would the certification be since they are proof? And would it be worth my time and money to do this?

Thanks

If you think the older eagles would grade high then by all means send them to NGC. Related to "What would the certification be since they are proof?", what do you mean? The cost? How would they be graded? Etc.

I imagine the cost would be as described on their web site. The 3 eagles are proofs, still in their US Mint case, would NGC remove the coins from the case without any problem, I see in some posts they charge a dollar per case? What is there grade for a proof coin?

NGC has all of thier fees posted on thier site. They will take a coin out of a holder for a dollar, MS, circ, or proof. They us PF to designate a proof coin and a numberical grade. You could also get DC(Deep Cameo) or Cam(Cameo) as a designation. Hope that helps. Good luck smile.gif Welcome to the boards!

You would be wise to pay the dollar fee for removal from the capsule. One tiny mark on a proof coin could be costly in grade and value. thumbsup2.gif

By all means pay the extra dollar.

I once got a big fat juicy fingerprint on a proof I was trying to remove from a mint holder.

I know the feeling. I was trying to remove a silver eagle proof from a mint holder, but then the knife blade I was using slipped and nicked the coin... I'm paying the $1 from now on!!
