I was almost robbed in a coin store..

My wife and I spent a good 3 hours maybe 4 yesterday in a coin shop. We had found a shop with a rather large bucket of early 1900's pennies. We decided to fill in our folder that was short about 15 or so pennies. About 2 hours into our search two fellas walked into the store. They were quite loud and obnoxious. They were obviously lost, but the situation would have been worse if the owner had asked them to leave his store. After a few minutes the taller one asked to see the most expensive coin in the store. There were two operators on duty in addition to my wife and I. It was later discovered that all of us started to panic inside when he asked to see the coin. One of the owners had asked the guy what kind of coin he was looking for. Again the customer said he want the most expensive one he had. The owner was trying his hardest to keep the situation under control so he told the guy that he had a lot of inventory and unless the customer knew what he was looking for, he would be unable to show him anything. At this point I picked up my wife’s purse and quietly left the building. I spent the rest of the time in the back seat of my Explorer with the cell phone handy in case these guys pulled a gun. I now realize that it was a very cowardly thing of me to do since I left my poor wife in the store to fend for her self. Haha I would learn later that the customer told the owner that he wanted to get into coin collecting and so he wanted to start off with a bang. He wanted a real expensive coin to start his collection. Of course these guys were full of [embarrassing lack of self control] since they were both on foot and dressed very poorly. I live in Dallas and nobody walks in this town. We don’t have a very good public transportation system and everything is too spread out to walk to anything. These guys were obviously dead beats and were likely casing the place. The whole ordeal really scared the 4 of us. For the rest of the time we were there we rehashed the situation and came to the conclusion that they were up to no good.

I am wondering how often coin stores get robbed. I guess if you knew anything about coins it wouldn’t be hard to understand that there is value in them and can easily be sold, especially via the internet.

The coin shops I go to hardly ever get robbed. Maybe a few silver coins taken out of bowls sitting on the counter, but nothing at gunpoint. I think that snce coin collecting is such a high dollar hobby, dealers and sellers would be prepared with at least security cameras/systems not to mention the firepower they may be packing.

You're right. That was a pretty cowardly thing to do. If you thought that there was any danger, you should have taken your wife out of that situation.

Yea ok...so in hind sight I see that now. It honestly didnt occur to me at the time. Why would I be worried enough to take my wifes purse out, thinking there was going to be a robbery and leave my wife behind? Too funny really.

The store was in Plano. Big difference I know, but it didnt occur to me that some of you might be in the area. The store was Lone Star Mint in Plano, Tx.

Coin stores do get robbed. I knew an employee of a store in Salt lake City that was shot in the head and played dead (he survived) while the gunman spent about (20) minutes stealing coins. This particular killer had robbed a half dozen stores and tried to kill each of the owners. He did kill (5) people.
