Got my first submission back today!!!!!!!!!!

6 posts in this topic

First off let me say that I am just a "starter" I sent in a 1959 proof set and a 1976 silver 3-piece set that my grandpa had. Well I am happy with the 59 set it graded PF66 for the dime, quarter, and half. The nickel is 67 and the penny is 68 RD. Kinda disappointed with the 3-piece 1976 set though. 65 for the quarter and dollar and 66 for the half.

But my question is, what do I have to do to get these in a multi-holder. I checked the box on the submission form for multi holder and also wrote it on the comments line. I really hate to send them back because it took so long in the first place. They still have some of my coins that have said quality control in my order status for about 5 days now.

Thanks

Can't help you with the multi-holder, but when your coins are in quality control, you will probably receive some back in a body bag, ie improperly cleaned, artificial color or toning, damage to obverse or reverse and a myriad of other problems. I too have just recently received my first submissions back. I sent in 5 Indian quarter eagles and three came back "bagged" mostly for improper cleaning. Bummer. I've read on this chat board that many of the raw coins out there ( especially on E-Bay) are problem coins. Let the buyer beware. Good luck with your collecting and check into this chat room frequently because there are some very knowledgeable people contributing and us newbies can learn a lot from them.

How would you quantify many ? 10%?..25%?..50%?

I think what you will learn here is that the members will tell you over and over to read as much as you can about coins that interest you; study as many coins as possible; learn how to identify characteristics of problem coins; spend only what you can afford to lose; and finally, walk away if you have any doubts.

There are many good deals that can be had at internet auctions, including eBay. A coin only becomes a "problem coin" when someone, who doesn't know what they are looking at, buys it.

NOT TO INSTIGATE,

However, my first submission did not entail ANY BB (bodybags) and if his came straight from mint sets I doubt he'll get any improperly cleaned, alt. surfaces etc. It took a 1943 penny from my grandfather in law and a ebay Morgan on another submission for my first two BB (my error).

I do agree that I no longer buy raw coins off ebay because no matter how many times I ask or how much I study a seller or pic, this Morgan did not look cleaned and it came back with obv. cleaned (how we did one side?) so, I'll stick with my dealer who sold us the other two that did OKAY.

Now to my one current beef with NGC, after submitting a three piece silver MS bicentennial set that I used the whole cloth glove removal system for to put them into flips (which I hate doing, they seem so safe mint sealed) I read a thread that it's better to send them in, in their mint pkg and pay the extra dollar. Personally, I was under the impression that was a "bad submitter" fee, so I avoided doing it. I truly wish they had a disclaimer that they saw that as the smarter way to submit and that we should bite the bullet, pay the extra money and not remove coins from mint holders. In the thread a grader, or something along that line actually suggests that as a smart way to submit and I was a little miffed. SO, live and learn and pay the extra dollar would be my newest lesson. tonofbricks.gif

Glad to see a newbie like I (still within my first year) who didn't get bodybagged the first run out. It still stinks when it happens later but, you learn. Besides, when it happened, it was on my free coupon!

When you know, I'd like to know how the rest of the coins did! popcorn.gif

i don't even buy raw from dealers. i find that almost a third of those end up with some kind of problems. i'm no newbie--i have a 10x loupe and the works and have been collecting for 25 years, and i look for all the obvious signs, but i still get stuck with losers. i agree that the chance of getting a BB on eBay is even greater, but it's from all teh sellers, dealers included.

pay a liittle more, get a top tier slab, and save yourself the hassle.
