What are the best holders for raw coins?

11 posts in this topic

I've been using airtite holders with rings for my individual raw coin storage. I was wondering what the rest of you use and why you have made that choice.

For coins that are in pretty good condition and that I don't want to have certified I use airtights or hard plastic 2X2's. If I have some coins that are of low value but I still want to keep them, I use regular plastic flips, or cardboard and mylar 2X2's. I keep bulk coins of the same denomination and series in plastic tubes and I use OGP for anything that came directly from the mint.

Click on the following link. The last pic shows how I doubled up the holder to set the coin back in the holder. This also keeps the coins from rubbing up to each other. This works great for me and I have just recently started labeling the holders with their grades.

Thanks for the slide show! You can certainly store a lot of coins that way.

I was always under the impression that one wants to get their coins out of cardboard holders. Was that because of PVC? Or because of contact damage with other coins? Doubling up the holder as Leothelion does would help prevent rub from contact.

Any other thoughts? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

You need to really do your homework on PVC before deciding on how to store your coins. Just look for the Mylar flips or cardboard 2x2 that have the Mylar film. It's the sulfer in cardboard that you need to worry about. But I don't know for certain the content of sulfer in the 2x2 cardboard holders that I use. I have only noticed the toning of a few of my proof coins but I blame that on the 2x2 cardboard box and unsealed Mylar flips I kept them in. Nothing rare was loss. It was an

early-on lesson that I learned.
