myself i love proof gold especially the

three dollar gold

and civil war proof gold coinage

and pre civil war proof gold coinage

and also a large piece say like a proof eagle as the double eagles are monster priced as of late

but the early gold coins are the cats meow and i guess for me are neck and neck with proof gold

I try not to think about either since they would throw my budget way off if I went to purchase one.

Albanese had a great point when he mentioned that proof gold is completely unrivaled in its beauty and appeal, especially with a deep cameo.

Personally, I think that they should take all pre 1933 gold and melt them down and make purdy new ones so that modern collectors can enjoy them all over again. 893whatthe.gif

Early gold would be my default choice, because I'm not big into proof coinage period. A proof coin was minted with the purpose of keeping it in pristine condition, so one would expect a lot of high-grade proof coinage to exist. No big deal.

But business strike coins had no such advantage to their survival rate, so when an early high-grade business-strike-anything comes along, it's a minor numismatic miracle.

Can I get Proof early gold? I think that King of Siam proof eagle is one of the most beautiful coins I've seen!

I can certainly understand the appeal of proof gold - especially 19th century. But if I had to choose, I'd take an early gold piece any day.

I know it's not "early" but what the heck, it's one of my favorites:

Oh my. 893whatthe.gif Rochester suddenly sounds like a very scary place to me. 893whatthe.gif How long would it take you to turn me into a manly man, a collector with testosterone to burn, one who laughs at the cost of proof gold and scoffs at the idea of buying it slabbed?

I prefer proof MODERN gold. Especially the one ounce coins. That mirror finish paired with Lady Liberty shining all over the obverse of the coin is simply remarkable.

Early gold, I am told

holds appeal to make one squeal

mint state gold will be sold

to one with mon and to the bold

circulated & proof gold of old

certainly are coins to behold!
