sacajawea 2002-2006

I'm a new coin collector. I started with the state quarters and have almost finished them. Now I am looking for more coins to collect. I saw that there is a new nickel series out so I have started that as well. In addition I have started the Sacajawea series. I am only collecting circulated coins as I thought they would be cheap and easy to start collecting. I purchased a few rolls of Sacajawea dollars from my bank today and proceeded to search the lot. I soon realized that 2000 was a great year for Sacajawea dollars as those were the only ones I found in my starting rolls. For the rest of my day I have circulated that few rolls at various banks hoping to find something newer then 2000. It has started to become a serious issue for me. I went to a main branch in Dallas and bought them out of all their Sacajawea dollars which was 400 or so. So far I have only seen about 1 percent of 2001 and 99 percent 2000. I have yet to run across a single 2002 - 2006. I have asked my bank to order me 1000 more dollars from our fed branch in Dallas. I am hoping to find a better assortment in that lot. I am having doubts though after sifting through 400 coins and finding nothing I need.

So here is my question. What am I doing wrong to collect Sacajawea dollars? Were the 2000 coins mass produced with subsequent years having very little made or is there some thing else I am missing? Maybe the coins don’t circulate that often. It seems that most of the banks I talked to said that they do not order any Sacajawea dollars but instead only collect them from customers and ship them to the fed. I was hoping to get a few rolls of un-circulated coins from my bank. From what little I have read so far, that is a possibility when banks order coins from the Fed. Correct me if I am wrong here, but can’t I ask my bank to order un-circulated coins from the Fed? How does one get these rolls of new coins I see for sell on EBay and what not?

Thanks for the assistance. A little knowledge here will help me go a long way in my new endeavor.

Many coins were circulated for 2000, and a few for 2001, like you have observed. No other years were ever released to the public, and you can buy rolls or bags of the current year from the mint.

Oh so that explains it. Duh! So the deal is that they were not circulated. So I have to either get them from the mint or from a dealer then. Where would I have obtained that information, in case I need it in the future?

There are a few of the later years in circulation but they were not sent there by the US Mint. Instead they were bought from the mint in bags and or rolls and then spent by someone at face value. Probably about 1 in 3000 coins or so based on what I have been seeing in my FT job.

If you want to ensure that you will receive all future Sacagawea $'s, you can register on the U.S. Mint website, www.usmint.gov , and enroll in their subscription programs. The 2006 Sac is still available, but if you'd rather not enroll for the subscriptions, you can also call in your order at 1-800-USA-MINT.

For any previous issues, you will just have to go the dealer or eBay route to obtain them.

Just wondering , if your looking thru all those 2000 Sac's you might want to look for a pattern coin. There is a article on the NGC news web page 6/22/05 http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.asp?IDArticle=279

about these and what to look for. im not sure what they are worth but i bet someone who like to get one. Thru my source, I've seached thru hundreds and hundreds over the past couple years of dollar coins and i havent found any patterns but you never know. Plus I'm also looking for nice Susan B's anyways. Here in NYS I get about 3 out of every 10 Susan B's for every Sacagawea. The fun is in the search. Ive found all the SBA's this way ( except the 81's) Let me know if you do?
