PVC Question

23 posts in this topic

Hi,

I just finished making a bok out of cardboard and clear packaging tape to transport my coins in, because I don't have the money to buy an NGC or PCGS plastic slab box. I finished and started wondering if the tape has PVC in it, and if it's safe to put coins in. Does anyone know?

Thanks,

Zach

I don't know if it has PVC, but if you need slab boxes you should just ask, there are many of us who have extras that we would give away if someone needs them.

Zrlevin I had the same problem a few weeks ago. I've got about a dozen slabs and I needed something to transport them in securely. I tried a few different tupperware boxes and things of that nature, but I ended up using a taped up shoebox. Now those dozen slabs are floating all over around my house because I just haven't gotten the time to get a box foreheadslap.gif

That’s a good price. I purchased a case of Whitman boxes and only paid one shipping from who I do not remember. I like the foam sheets which prevents rattling and now use the foam sheets on my NGC Boxes. The Whitman Boxes will hold any make of slab.

I have noticed not all, but some NGC slabs fitting just a little tight in the end slot of the Whitman Boxes.

The thing is...I only own three slabs. I designed and built this box to hold six slabs and 25 cardboard 2x2's, so I can take coins to/from my dealer, so I don't have to keep my coins in my pockets etc. I don't think that a slab box would fit my needs. Is the consensus that it will be safe to store coins in it for short periods of time?

I'll post a picture of it in a few minutes.

It's not pretty, but it works.

It is shown holding 13 cardboard and 4 Intercept sheild 2x2s, as well as my three NGC slabs. I'm only worried about PVC because I used liberal amounts of Packaging tape to hold it together.

Thanks,

Zach

I was wondering about those Whitman boxes. I was thinking about purchasing one off eBay, but I wasn't sure if both my PCGS and NGC slabs would fit in it. Do they both fit in it just fine? If they do then I'll buy one.

Yes... The NGC will sometimes be tight on the ends..but both will fit

Not all cardboard products are produced to be archival safe and acid-free. They are definitely not recommended for long-term storage.

Earlier NGC slabs are a bit thinner than the newer ones. that's why the fit's tight. The earlier slabs will easily drop into the end slots of the Whitman boxes (as will PCGS slabs, which are also shorter, height-wise).
