Circulation Find ...

18 posts in this topic

I recently went to 15 different banks buying up rolls and $25 boxes of cents. Slowly I'm going thru them and came across this one earlier today.

This made my day!!!! First time I have ever come across this 1980 1c FS-034 out of circulation. Heck -- if I don't find anything else, this made it worthwhile. Yep -- the thrill of the hunt pays off!

Believe me, I feel your pain. I just dumped out a 1/3 full giant bottle of pennies (you know, those 10-gallon ones). I'm currently sorting them into decades and pulling out anything that's immediately notable like wheat pennies, canadian cents, off-center strikes. I'll eventually go through the decades bins and look for notables there. If nothing else, I should end up with a complete circulated collection from 1960 foward.

It's fascinating to notice the little patterns, such as there being so many more coins preserved in the bottle from the '80s, '90s and 2000s vs. the '70s and '60s. Coins predating 1960 are turning out to be quite rare, and of perhaps 1000 coins I've gone through so far, I've only found around a half dozen wheats and two canadian pennies (whoopie).

Let me tell you, if you've never sorted pennies for long periods of time, you really haven't lived.

Billy...........I salute you.

Best one I ever snared was the 1971-P DDO, the one with the distorted hub doubling.

That's a nice DDO and very popular. I came across one of them (finally) last year in circulation. I remember attending a FUN Show (I think it was '97 show) and Mike Ellis (CONECA president) had a bunch of them with most around MS63/64 Red. He was selling them for $40 apiece. I bought 5 of them. They now easily bring premiums in the hundreds.

Maybe this is a better image.

From your pic Chris, I believe it machine doubling. I can see it on the date and on the mint mark. Genuine doubled die will not show any doubling on the mint mark since prior to 1990 it was punched into the working die after the hubbing process.

I guess I should have left the date out and just showed you the mintmark. Both loops of the "S" are filled. I wasn't even considering any possible doubling especially since you were able to enlighten me on those CA States Quarters.

You almost make me want to sit down with a few $100 in cents, not! 893whatthe.gif

I can understand where your coming from Hayden. It does take a lot of patience and perserverance to do what I do looking at circulated coins all day, every day.

Honestly Hayden -- actually I'm glad you and the overwhelming majority of collectors feel that way. Do you know why I'm glad?

I'll bet I can answer that. I have had occasion to get a Morgan VAM from Hayden because he doesn't want to take the time to examine and research them. Good for me, Billy, and good for you! Right?

That's it! I call it the piece-of-the-pie syndrome. The more collectors who start searching coins like I do -- the less piece of pie I can get, or to be more precise, the less chance I have to find something!

So -- all of you out there in the collecting world -- do me a big favor, don't look at your circulated cents.

edited to add: As some of you know -- the other day I went to 15 different local banks buying up rolls and $25 boxes of cents. I ended up that day spending almost $1000. But the key for me is I'm in a win-win situation. I STILL HAVE the $1000 dollars. It's just in cents. Already I came across the 1980 1c Major DDO that I posted on this forum. Now that coin, since it's 25 years ago, has to have been in quite a few peoples hands. Now I'm certainly glad that during those 25 years, not ONE of those people look at cents like I do that could of had that 80 DDO in their possession. Because if one of them did -- bingo, I wouldn't have come across it. I been offered $100 for it already. I have also found some of the 2006 1c DDO's and have been offered $50 a piece for them as well. One sold on eBay just a couple of days ago for $61. Now with these 2006 DDO's Dave Harper wants me to do an article for Numismatic News, which in turn will pay me for doing the article as well as paying me for the use of my photos.

So already, I'm making quite a profit and I haven't spent any of my initial $1000 because I still have the $1000. And I have only been thru about $25 of the $1000 so far.

Yep -- please don't look at your circulated cents. Throw em in the jar, piggy bank, water cooler bottle, wrap em up take em back to the bank. After all -- I'm out here waiting around the corner to look at them!!!!!!!!!

Now some of you will be saying hey Billy that takes a lot of time to do that. Sure -- your right. But let me ask you a question. Whatever you collect in your hobby, doesn't it take time as well? Isn't time relevant to whatever we do?

I just luv it! Having fun and making a profit to boot! It don't get no better than this -- at least for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It also takes most of us a lot of time to earn the money to buy coins.
