SBA Narrow Rim MS60 $850? What is a Narrow RIM???

8 posts in this topic

I am totally lost on this one. I thought there were only two types. Near date and Far date. Or Narrow rim and Wide rim.

Does anyone have pictures of the three different types of rims for these coins, or a description that makes it easy to differentiate between the three? The wide rim is easy, but these other two have me at a loss.

Yep, they only list 2 types near and far or narrow and wide. The question is..... is there a third more common type or is that it and Numismedia is all screwed up in there pricing of the 79 Narrow rim?

You may have already noticed, but there is another thread posted on "Ask NGC" regarding this. Perhaps it will answer this for you.

The 1979 P SBA business strike only has two varieties, but they are called different things. In addition, the NGC census lists three lines, which leads to confusion. The first variety is the near date, also called the wide rim. This is by far the rarer and more valuable, and Coin World Trends lists this as $100 in MS-65. The other variety is the far date, also and more commonly called the narrow rim. This is much more common, and is listed as $15 in MS-65. All SBA's after 1979 are the wide rim, so you can compare if you have further questions. Note that this variety does not exist on 1979 D or S coins, so do not pay a premium for them.

There is a further confusion associated with the NGC census (I don't know about PCGS, but I am assuming they are similar) in that there are three lines. The first is just listed as 1979 P, the second is Narrow Rim, and the third is Wide Rim. The first two, 1979 P and 1979 P Narrow Rim, are the same thing. The population for Narrow rim appears much smaller because the designation is newer, and more Wide rims are submitted because of their rarity.

So the conclusion is, do not even think of paying $850 on a narrow rim SBA (and that price is absurd even for a wide rim). Hope that helped.
