Die Variety News

11 posts in this topic

I am nearing completion of my inaugural Volume 1, Number 1 issue of "Die Variety News" newsletter. This newsletter will aspire to keep collectors abreast of recent discoveries involving all types of die varieties for all denominations to include but not just limited to doubled dies, RPM's, OMM's, "wavy step" varieties, "doubled statue" varieties, "spiked heads" etc., etc.

I am also working with a consultant who is very knowledgable in possibly making available the newsletter via secure web site with pass protection for viewing. It is not definate yet -- but in the works.

This post is just notification about my newsletter and inquiring if any would be interested. I am NOT soliciting any subscriptions or pre-publication discounts at this present time. I only desire to know who would be interested in this newsletter. Quite a few collectors and a few major dealers as well as three different TPG's have expressed interest in the newsletter to include advertising.

I know there are a few members on this forum who have expressed a desire to learn more about die varieties in our hobby and this newsletter will also expound on educational articles in each issue.

Sample copies will be available with me while I attend the upcoming ANA Money Show in Atlanta. I have scanned two sample pages that you may view at the following links so you can have an idea of the style and format of the newsletter.

Die Variety News (Sample Page #2)

I reiterate that I am NOT selling anything in this post. But only desire to know if any would be interested in my newsletter. When the newsletter is available for subscriptions -- I will post on the BST forum.

If you are interested just PM me.

I sincerely thank you for your time.

Sounds good to me if the subscription isn't too high. Would price values be included next to the varieties?

Excellent question.

Yes -- I plan to provide a price guideline for the varieties that are in that particular issue. For example -- on the scan of the sample cover page you see a 1973-D 1c RPM and a 1988-D 1c RPM. Somewhere in that issue I will post values for those varieties (as well as all the other varieties in that particular issue). The 1973-D 1c CRPM-003 that is illustrated on the front cover has a known sale of $100 in AU grade to a collector. I would put that in the price guideline with a * beside the value denoting actual sale. I.E.; 1973-D/D 1c CRPM-003: AU-50 - $100*

edited to add: To help answer some great questions I have been receiving via PM:

I will be annotating all varieties that are in a particular issue any known cross-references to that variety. I.E.; FS#, Snow #, CONECA #, Wexler #, Potter VCR# and so forth. This will afford the reader as much information as possible about that particular die variety. I also plan to limit the text so as to provide more room for photos. The overwhelming majority of collectors what to see more photos and you can see that in the sample page #2.

The newsletter is not take away from already published references or any upcoming books that are to be published. The newsletter is designed to be "dynamic," where as a published book is "static." My newsletter is to further enhance collectors with the latest information and discussion of educational topics in continuous real-time. For example a new important discovery can be published very quickly in my newsletter while an already published book can not. Don't get me wrong -- books are great and needed for reference libraries. The newsletter is designed to further enhance a collectors knowledge base.

What kind of "Spiked Heads" are you talking about?

The "Spiked Heads" have increased in popularity with collectors stemming from the many articles that have been published by my colleague Ken Potter in NN and CW weekly magazines. I recognize that following and will publish in the newsletter the more dramatic examples whether proof and/or business strike. "Spiked Heads" is sort of a catch-all phrase and can include major die cracks extending from the bust or thru the date to the bust or for that matter -- PMM dramatic types. They may not be in every issue -- but as exciting examples become known -- certainly would like to add them in the newsletter. I hope this answers your question.

You should see the collection I have found. Are you just interested in the proof types? If not, I have an awsome collection of State Quarters also in uncirculated condition.
