A fellow board member ("Larry") put it this way, and I have to admit, I just might come to adopt it as my own:

 

"I buy coins to look at"

 

I can't explain my love of coins much better than that. How would you state it in six words or less 893scratchchin-thumb.gif ?

Buy what looks cool to me.

 

While I have several themes that I try to work on, the above always is the #1 factor. Most all the coins I've purchased for my personal collection have been because they look cool to me. Grade, Pop, Plastic Company, none of that matters if the coin is cool.

Anyway, this is what I thought on about page three of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and, about 300 pages into the book, the author came to nearly the same quote! foreheadslap.gif

 

Quality is what you value.

 

By the way, I only read Zen because a fellow graduate student told me that she had read the book and that she thought the main character reminded her of me! 893whatthe.gif893whatthe.gif893whatthe.gif

History and art in my hands!

 

There is simply nothing more compelliing to me than the combination of the history that a coin possesses by virtue of where it came from, the artistic nature and beauty of the coin, and the rarity of appeal. These things draw me to coins (and particular coins) more than anything else.
