I've got a 1909 VDB. You may be saying to yourself " Well so do I! " This coin is currently in an air-tight holder. Now here's what makes my coin special. It is of a very high quality and RAINBOW TONED! Now here lies the dilemma. Do I leave the coin as-is and marvel at it's beauty, or do I send it off to NGC to have 3 others critique it and have it forever be encased in a plastic slab? What to do???

What do you think it will garde? what do you plan to do with it?

I think honestly it would grade a 62 or a 63. Scanner's broken right now so I can't post a picture. Sorry Hoot.

Do you want to keep the coin? If yes, then don't have it encapsulated. Encapsulation simply will not add to your enjoyment of the coin.

Suppose it certifies at a high grade. Then will you suddenly want to sellit? If so, then it sounds like you were not honest with yourself in answering the first question above! So the question is whether or not it's a coin you want to keep, or make money on, neither of which is a bad answer.

Suppose it's bagged for AT, then what? Now you don't want the coin, even though you said you did in the first question? Here again, that's just not being honest with yourself. Decide whether you want to keep the coin based on your own feelings and criteria, not those of some "third party".

At least, that's how I would approach it from the point of view of a collector. Now if you are more concerned with the business aspect, in other words, getting top dollar, then by all means, get it in a holder!

And "just in case" you become so undecided that you become anxiously depressed and your mood swings become monumental, please accept my invitation to send to me ( I'll pay postage ) so that I may present it my grandson.

Hey, all humor aside -- keep it and enjoy it; let someone else worry about the $$$

I just got off the phone with a fellow board member ("Larry"), and he made a simple, yet profound statement that I agree wholeheartedly with:

"I buy coins to look at"

Can it be stated more succinctly than that? smile.gif

Thanks, Larry, for one of the wisest things I've ever heard a collector say.
