It's possible that someone was trying to make a coin ring with it. I've made them from silver dimes before, but never clad because it's too hard. I'm wondering if someone might have attempted to make one with a clad dime and realized the metal was too hard. basically you just hold the dime on a block of wood and repeatedly hit it with the curved surface of a spoon. The rim starts to expand until you get it to the right size and then drill the center out. That's my guess.

Ive studied this under all types of magnification. The clad layer extends onto and over the rim ..there is no indication that this has been struck or hit with foreign objects. Under 200x magnifaction the reeds are slighlty visible on the rim. Thanks for your reply.

I had a wheat cent that was done the same way. Pretty cool technique. I tried it myself with some pocket change but didn't have the patience for it 27_laughing.gif.
