$20 Doubled Die?

5 posts in this topic

A collector brought this '79-S $20 in for me to attribute. I checked with my library and researching the internet but so far unable to locate a reference to it. Any info appreciated. Thanks ...

Something crazy is going on there. It almost looks like certain elements are a different size, especially the arrows and the T. Was there a different variety that year, like a large arrows over small arrows type? The doubling also looks very irregular, is it maybe some kind of recut devices? You see that alot more on older foreign coins, I have never heard of it on a $20. It doesn't appear to be an abraded die, there is notching in several places. So, I have no idea what is going on, but I am not an expert.

I just realized that this post doesn't help much at all.

I don't have (or know of) any reference that attributes doubled dies for this series. Does one exist? I guess that's the same question you asked!

I'd like to see more of that coin.

The spread is clearly toward the bottom of the reverse.

Your first pic should be rotated 90 counterclockwise, just for reference.

My first guess is a Class I DD with a counterclockwise rotation.

BUT.....

I can't really begin to have an opinion on the doubling without seeing the rest of the coin, up close and personal.
