How much to pay for a 1882 CC $10 eagle?

I don't think that you can assume greysheet is a reasonable guide for a coin like this. I would suspet that you'll pay what's being asked or perhaps only a token discount. If the coin is priced in the 11 grand range, you'd be doing well.

ChosenOne----My answer is more towards the coin's rarity than it is the dollar value. I collected CC20 dollar gold for over 10 years running---so I have some knowledge of 'rarity'. Depending on which book you choose to believe---there are between 125 and 235 left in existance. NGC has slabbed only 36 at a higher grade [ 34 in Au58]. So----do you want the coin? Nice coin? Original Skin? If the answer is yes to these questions----PAY THE PRICE---as long as it is not totally out of line. When do you think that you will see another?? Yes, there are a few around. But not many. Bob [supertooth]

I like the coin & the reason I want to get into it is because I want something that will turn out to be a good investment down the road. In your opinion what would be a good price? I would be giving up 2 commons in a 1926 $10 Indian NGC MS64 & a 1901 $10 Liberty PCGS MS64.

I just don't know what to look at or compare to as far as knowing what a good deal is.

thanks!

ChosenOne----Again, I must answer your question without really giving you what you want. It has been awhile since I was in the gold game----so exact dollar figures are sort of not in my realm at the moment. So, I will say this. As an investment, CCgold will outclass most anything in the coin business. It's rarity continues to demand an increased price. I would have made a king's fortune on mine had I been able to hold it till today. So, take your greysheet----sum up the values of the pieces. If you get close to what the figures say----I would sure get the CCgold. Over a 10 year span of time, most any CCgold will increase more than any investment that I can think of----short of winning the lottery. Certainly it will beat out anything common. I will give you one example---In about 1978, I bought an 1871 CC twenty for 2750. It was in a really nice XF per the cataloguer when I sold it. What would that 2750 be worth today?? Even better----could you find the coin?? Bob [supertooth]

since i cant seethe coin in hand sight seen

lets assume some things

this coin has a great original skin to it

the eye appeal is incredible and it is a super nice au55

the strike is 100% and with none of the usual common problems scrapes on cheek rim nicks copper sports etc.

and the coin has full lustre and is a full au55+

and then this coin for me would be fairly priced at around $6500++

now since most of what i have seen in au55 holders ngc mostly i really do not like but this has nothning to dom with this coin in this thread as i have not seen it

and those i have seen in au58 pcgs and ngc holders that are true killer au58 have gone for 14500+++

and of course AN IMPORTANT CAVIET *****this information i am providing here is for the above based on my sight seen in hand look at the coin and it meets all of my cirteria as per the above

show me the coin in hand sight seen and then i CAN TELL YOU

but in an ngc au55 holder this coin could be worth anywhere from 2900-9500 to pay depending on waht the coin looks l9ike in hand sight seen

Yes, but I was a little thrown off by the part about the 11 grand range?

That's approximately how much you could expect to pay for a nice, original specimen as Bob described. I guess I should have provided an actual range, however. Given that, I'd say anything from $8,000 to $11,000 would be within reason. You might find one for quite a bit less (around 5 grand) if stipped of originality and otherwise fugly. Nice AU58 specimens go for well above greysheet (up to 17 grand) when nice, and as low as 10 grand when battered and stripped of originality.
