Would this coin grade at NGC?

I've posted this coin a few times before and I apologize for the old pics but I didn't feel like taking some new ones:

It has beautiful original thick skin, but I'm wondering if the scratch might hold it back? BB? Or do you think it would grade? Grade?

I believe it would get BB....but I wouldn't have a problem seeing it holdered with a small downgrade due to the scratch....say in a EF40 holder. I would say the coin is in the AU53-AU55 range outside of the scratch. If you ever send that one in...let me know how it turns out thumbsup2.gif

I don't think so. The scratch is too big in relation to the coin.

I've seen worse that graded. Here's an 1873 op.3 5c graded 62 by PCGS (pardon the photo -- I c[r]opped it from Heritage).

I say "worse" because the coin is otherwise in mint condition; and, it seems to me, that circulated coins ought to get more of a break when it comes to this kind of damage. The scratch is more of bruise in the shape of a backward Z. It appears worse in person than on the photo. But it's still a DDO. wink.gif So, Hayden, I don't know whether or not your coin would BB. It certainly does make one wonder where the TPGs draw the line on holdering damaged coins.

I think we need to keep in mind that this is a greatly enlarged image. The scratch would be quite tiny at actual size. Personally, I wouldn't bag it, but would take off about 10 points.

I think BB by NGC. I am also wondering about al the lower reverse lighter scratches.

My guess is that they would net it down 5-10 points. The marks on the lower reverse appear to be fibers and not on the coin. As long as the scratch is contemporary with the circulation of the coin, and it appears to be, the services are much more lenient. Here is an AU55 CB dime with a similar scratch through the cap.

But the scratch is much more hidden on your coin as well as the Shield 5c. On the coin in question, the scratch jumps out at you. It's the first thing you see. I think that plays a major factor in the decision process to BB/slab a coin.

I don't think those are scratches. I think they are Hayden's wayward nose hairs.

I think you have a point, Greg, about the position of the scratches. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif
