1996 Silver Eagle

7 posts in this topic

Hey guys. I got a 1996 silver eagle a few years back as a gift. Not realizing the value, and being a new collector at the time I took no steps toward caring for the coin. Now the coin is a light brown in color and scratched up pretty badly. Can you guys reccomend anything that I should do to remove some of the coloring (tarnish?) and maybe diminish some of the scratches? Is the coin still worth more than the ounce of silver in it? I sure hope so... Thanks in advance.

There is nothing you can do for the scratches and, considering the condition it is in, it is not worth dipping to remove any oxidation. The 1996 ASE is only a $40 coin in MS and $50 in PF, and these prices are for pristine pieces with original packaging, so I would just keep it as is.

I have 3 1996 silver eagles in original plastic flips, seem pristee. You think they are woth getting certified?

tahnks, dennis g

I may be wrong but I think that the 1996 date is one of the better dates. If it is, then it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing to certify them. But, there are so many thousands upon thousands certified, I really can't see the advantage in it. I would keep them as is, with all of the COA and original packaging.
