Stacks Northern Bay Collection

Hold on . . . there'll be replies. There's nothing in the offerings of US federal coinage for me, but some of the foreign pieces are calling (not likely to find their way into either PCGS or NGC plastic). There's a lot of world gold in this auction. Thanks for posting, Paul.

Stack's auctions of only raw coins make me think none of their lots would be accepted by NGC grading service. confused-smiley-013.gif

Do you think both those coins will grade 65 at PCGS? The IHC looks terrific, but I have no idea how much the chatter and the smudge on the obverse will affect the grade.

I'd be more inclined to think NGC small cents would not be accepted by Stacks for resale. You are delusional if

you think NGC slabed small cents are something to aspire to.

As per raw collections, keep in mind the finest 1877 Indian cent of all time came from a Stack's auction, very raw.

They let you post here, Paul?

Maybe not after this post Tom wink.gif

Howdy Paul, I have yet to see NGC moderators react in a manner that would suggest they take NGC criticism poorly. So, I guess you will stick around. wink.gif

Did those NGC moderators get to you, zrlevin? wink.gif I write this because I read what you wrote prior to your editing it. grin.gif

I didn't get to read zrlevin's post before editing, and have no

clue what it eluded to. My loss. But have the guts to back up

any post you make here or anywhere else.

I sense NGC forum posters think coins are born into slabs?

They all were raw at some point. And as hard as it is to believe

some raw collections still exist, they do. Stack's clients tend to

be old school collectors. Every once in a while a great raw

collection shows up there. And please disregard their terrible

images.

I take offense to that; I think your comment is rude and uncalled for, and that you should apologize.

I back up my post 100%, but this is not the time, nor place for it.

Rude? I haven't a clue what you posted. Apologize? For what?

Give me a clue to what to apologize for before I apologize for it.Your post was erased before I saw it..

If this isn't the place to discuss whatever issue I still don't know about, where is?

This is the strangest post I've ever replied to, since I don't know what it was wink.gif

Someone help me with this one...

Calling me gutless for deleting my post.

A thread on "Stacks Northern Bay Collection" is not the place to discuss censorship by NGC's Moderators. Nor is the U.S. Coins forum.

You're not making that much sense yourself.

I'm at a loss to say what I'm at a loss to say about this thread.

Talking about coins is fun. Playing forum games gets old.

Let's end this post on a nice note. This Stack's sale has some wonderful coins.

Maybe you're thinking this way based on my first post:

If so, you misunderstood because of the ambiguity in what I wrote. I meant to say that I wouldn't want the coins in plastic and neither would many other collectors of the foreign coinage. My sense is that posters here and across the street are equally wed to slabs though perhaps for different reasons.

Howdy Paul, zrlevin's post dealt with asking a question of NGC regarding if their graders wear gloves when grading coins. I believe zrlevin's posted question was asked in the "Ask NGC" board, which is a fully moderated board where you submit your questions to NGC and then they post the questions with their answers, if they think the questions legitimate and of wide interest. Apparently, NGC answered that their graders do not wear gloves, which is something that you and I and many other collectors who have been around the block already know, and when zrlevin followed it up with another question about what precautions they use to make certain they do not harm the coins it was not responded to by NGC.

It seems that zrlevin interpreted this lack of follow up to be censorship. In my opinion, it is far from censorship and likely reflected a mindset at NGC that they had already answered the question and that this follow up simply didn't make much sense to them. Therefore, zrlevin was half-jokingly stating that there was censorship at NGC.

Shylock will immediately realize that this situation is vastly different than at PCGS where questions of the company and its practices are largely ignored and that the "Ask HRH" forum is heavily moderated and essentially emaciated. Also, if you go over the line at NGC they have moderators who will warn you and then will give you a public strike to let others know what you did and how to avoid getting another strike. I believe if you get three strikes in a year you are then suspended for a month or so. At PCGS they have no such system and posters just vanish when they are banned without any apparent warning.

So, the exchange between you two is indeed bizarre. Shylock, spend more time here and we would appreciate it greatly and you will find it relaxing and enjoyable; zrlevin, please realize that most of us know each other and are joking around with no harm meant. grin.gif

Shylock, I drove into NYC this past Friday and was able to view all the copper lots and much of the silver from the Northern Bay Collection at Stacks. Several of the Proof Large Cents are Astonishing. I had never even seen a Proof 1832 large Cent before Friday and I have looked at lots of Early Copper in the last 15 years. Several of the Proof Indian Cents are very nice as well, but I am not gonna tell you which ones! There were also several incredibly nice Seated Half Dimes and Dimes, both business strikes and proofs. All in all, it was a very well spent entertaining and education few hours at Stacks. I believe that some of the prices realized will be amazing. TomT.
