2003 S 1c "Ghost 3"

7 posts in this topic

Hello everyone.

I am new to these forums and I had a question. I was on eBay recently and noticed an auction for a 2003 Lincoln cent with a "Ghost 3" error.

Ghost 3

I was wondering if this is a good investment, how the error could have possibly happened, and if they were at all common? Thanks for your input, everyone!

I'm not well versed in varieties but I would imagine that this was a grease-filled die. Since it's on a proof coin it is somewhat surprising that no one caught it.

There were many common errors with ghosting in the 2003 proof sets. If I remember there were approximately nine different "errors" that were refered to across the set. They came out mostly on the first strike sets. You will notice a weakness on many date impressions of recent years for some reason on cents and dimes mostly where the last number is weak. When the "ghosts" first came out people were paying a lot for them, but they're really not worth investing any money in IMHO.
