1971-S PROOF DIME-EXTREME DIE CLASH

13 posts in this topic

Would like to know if anyone else has seen anything like this, for this or any other year. Still in the proof set.

Can't get the top of the head to show in the scan, but the entire head is evenly imprinted on the reverse. The leaves are imprinted on the obverse, especially on the bridge of the nose. Looks like he's wearing spectacles.

Yes, I have seen similar coins in higher denominations, but never in a proof set. I have seen several proof 'errors' that were snuck out of the SF mint and subsequently sold with dubious legitimacy. However, your coin is 100% legal and very, very rare in the set. I would assume this will sell for major money in an auction.

JC,

That is a great coin, and I agree with Truth that an error collector would be thrilled to own it. You should contact Alan Herbert at answerman2@aol.com , JT Stanton or Bill Fivaz . I believe they would have some interest in your find, and could certainly help establish a value.

What an amazing coin. I've not seen, let alone heard, of such a strong die clash within a Contemporary proof set. Neat coin and certainly a prize for the specialist.

That's very kind of you jeh46544. Here's an email I just got back from Mike Byers:

Hi James. There are extreme clashed dies on dimes and quarters in proof, on 71s thru 73s. Although very dramatic, they are around. Value for extreme examples....$200-300. Good luck.

Thank you,

Mike Byers

It doesn't add value to a coin made for circulation, because it's just common an occurrence. The original post featured a proof coin with a die clash, and that is something the Mint rarely allows to leave the building. That's why a proof coin with a visible die clash is rare and carries some premium.
