Need some help with this one

6 posts in this topic

I have a coin that looks very similar in size & appearance to the buffalo commemorative except that in place of the date on the obverse, there is "one troy ounce". On the reverse there is " one troy ounce" in place of "united states of america" & in the place of "one dollar" there is ".999 fine" & under that in place of the mint mark is "silver". The style of the indian & the buffalo are more similar to the buffalo nickel than the commemorative. Its size is about 39 mm & weight is very close to 1 oz. It has apparently been in existance at least 5 years before the buffalo commemoratives. (Another 'found my grandpa's old coin box in the attic' story). I do have pictures if necessary. Any ideas what this might be? Thanks.

I believe that it is a silver round, that contains one troy ounce of silver. It's not real money, nor is it manufactured by the mint. It's value fluxuates with the price of silver.

Zack,

Thanks again for the help. I was able to find a picture, but no information about who made it or when it was made. You were exactly right, they called it a 1 ounce silver round buffalo nickel. Guess I've still got some homework to do to find some history about it..

As I stated before this really was a kind of 'found my grandpa's old coin box in the attic' story, except it was my aunt that left it to me in about 1996. I put it in my coin sack & until recently had not had time to examine all the stuff that I had collected for many years. I'm about semi-retired & outlived most of my family & inherited most everybodies stuff. Everybody had a few old coins stashed away. Some morgans, peace $'s, IHC's, halves & etc. I'll probably need some more help later. Thanks again.
