Question About Toning ...

First -- right off-the-bat: As far as the world of toning, I am a beginner/rookie. I am asking you, the experts, of what to do in this situation.

In another post I mentioned about acquiring some rolls from a dealer at a recent local coin show. I'm slowing going thru the rolls and came across a BU Roll of 1972 Lincolns.

Every coin in the roll is toned! The majority exhibit similar toning to what I show you below. Please bear in mind the coin I am showing below is from my SCANNER. As we all know scanners do not do justice to coins and especially not showing the luster of a coin. The scan you see below does not do this coin justice. The luster exhibits blinding cartwheel flash.

What do I do? All 50 coins are beautiful. Should I get a few of them slabbed in hopes may be a few might get a "star" designation. Are these coins worth anything? Or -- is this a "Billy, your getting carried away and forget about em?" I'm asking because like I said -- I'm a beginner in toning. Since all the coins are each toned in similar fashion are they NT? Or are they AT? Also in the roll were 4 doubled die obverses! They were the DDO#3. So I also know the roll is of the same coins because they are exhibiting the same die markers. Therefore it would seem they came from a BU shotgun wrapped roll.

Lay it on me. If I'm being silly here -- then please say so. Let me know what you think. Thanks for your time and replys.

Don't bother slabbing them - they were stored in a very humid environment - got wet, dried out, got wet again, dried out - well you get the idea - that "toning" is not attractive and you'd be wasting your money - (the coins are worth at least 1 cent each)

So they're NT, but they're bad? Are they as bad as attractive AT's?

This board has me so confused. Christo_pull_hair.gif

Thanks for the reply. Oh well, I at least got some DDO's out of the roll. There worth more than 1 cent. I'll stick to varieties -- where I am an expert!

I agree that you would likely lose money if you slab them. They also look something like what you expect if a cent gets caught in a washing machine.

So Tom - you think that's caused by the detergent and not the water? crazy.gif

Hey -- I said I was a beginner. These came from a roll. But to make fun with your snide cracks is NOT cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't make fun when someone sends me a coin that is not a variety. I treat them professionally. But obviously some lack in those human qualities.

I was interested in learning about toning. NOT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey - Lighten up - I was jibbing TomB, not you - I told you what I think happened in my first post to your thread - and gave what I think is good advice so you wouldn't waste your money slabbing coins that are probably worth less than the slabbing fees - Tom was saying that he thinks they got wet also - but I don't think they would have gone thru a washing machine because the paper roll would have disintegrated - rather than say Tom - you can't run a roll thru the washing machine without the roll falling apart, I was gently kidding him about not thinking the comment thru - but I know TomB and he and I can kid with each other - I don't know you so if you've taken offense I'm sorry - none was intended.

What would have been really offensive if I had said "Hey they look great - slab the whole roll, you'll make a lot of money" That would have been unkind and could have cost you money.

As far as learning or not learning about toning - that's your choice - but try not to get too exercised about a little gentle humor here - There's a big difference between kidding about something and being nasty - no one was being nasty - you've greatly miscontrued this.

Your comment, "So Tom - you think that's caused by the detergent and not the water? crazy.gif" was inference to my coins. That's what you and Tom were talking about. As far as the coins were stored in a humid environment and getting wet explains to me what could have happened with this roll of coins. I have no problem with that. But your comment about "detergent" or was it the "water" with reference to a washing machine was bad humor, and that's putting it nicely. This is the kind of comments I expect to see "across-the-street" -- so you can keep those type of remarks over there -- I don't need them. I was trying to learn about toning. I'll pass. I don't need to "lighten up" -- you need to polish your professional etiquette.

Whoa.... 893whatthe.gif Billy dude...what's going on here......holy smokes.....Ron is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet and it is due to him and him alone that I now collect toned coins. Ron was gracious enough to take me under his wings last year and show me what was real and what was AT and what I should be spending my money on instead of the plain jane stuff I was buying.

He would be the very last person who would tease someone about their coins.....believe me....you have him completely wrong 893naughty-thumb.gif

We are all friends here so everyone go to a nutral corner and have a beer or something flowerred.gif

Dude, do yourself a favor and lighten up before you're dead of a stroke, okay?

Ron was polite and professional to you in his answer and I was echoing his thoughts and extended the information given to you to include that these cents look like those that are inadvertantly included in a load of laundry, which is absolutely true. Neither of us was cutting you down, nor were we belittling your coins. We told you the truth. Also, I am certain that neither of us has any reason to doubt that the coins came out of an original paper roll and looked this way. These things sometimes happen with copper.

Ron's comment to me was partly in jest and partly a serious question. It was an obvious joking remark to me, not you, and Ron and I know each other so he is free to speak to me in any manner he chooses. The serious part of his response concerns the fact that not only will storage of coins in a humid environment cause them to tone, but exposure to the chemicals in laundry detergent will also get them to tone as will short-term exposure to very hot water. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif So, when coins are put through a washing machine, what do you think is the causative agent for the toning? I think it a combination of factors.

Sit back and relax, no one in this thread has been discourteous to either you or your coins.

All of you guys are nice people and I respect all of you for what you have given to these boards. We shouldn't have a misunderstanding like this come between us. I'm sorry if I got a little carried away.
