Littleton Grading........

11 posts in this topic

Do any of you have any experience with Littleton's grading standards? I recently won an auction (havn't recieved the coin yet) that had an 1863 Indian Head graded AU-50 by Littleton. The auction photos were terrible, so I took a chance. If the coin actually came from Littleton originally and has not been mucked with, can I reasonably expect to recieve an AU coin?

The ultra-moderns that I've seen graded by Littleton were graded rather strictly - more in line with how ANACS traditionally graded them.

Not only is Littleton grading very strict, but they are very picky as well that coins they buy be solid for the grade, without distractions. Their coins don't have spots, dings or discolorations as might be seen on "average" coins. Years ago, I could frequently pick off some excellent Littleton coins on eBay. I think you'll be pleased.

I agree with James as to the buying habits of Littleton and did not mention these before because I thought they might be somewhat off-topic but now realize that they fit well in this thread. Littleton has a reputation on the bourse for buying many "collector grade" coins at strong prices. However, the coins must be solid to above average in grade and must be problem-free, as a rule.
