This Might Be A Little OT But Needed Some Help

59 posts in this topic

This might be a little OT but I need some help involving PhotoShop. Technically, it's involving coins so in some sense it's not entirely OT.

I'm in the process of building some Web pages. These pages are designed for providing information about different forms of collectable versus non-collectable doubling, a little about the hubbing process, various types of genuine hub doubling, Classes of doubling, examples with my photos that you have seen in some of my post, etc. yada, yada, yada. This is in hopes of helping beginning/novice collectors as well as helpful hints for seasoned veterans. I always advocate that there is no such thing as too much knowledge.

With that said -- I would like to make the pages nice and asthetically pleasing as possible with my limited talents using html code. I use PhotoShop (as well as other photo programs). I can't seem to figure out how one is able to overlap images of coins. Is there a way one does it in the PhotoShop program? Is it something to do with layers? Do I need to change the images to .gif? I hope I'm making sense in what I'm asking. I can put images of the coin (obv. & rev.) side-by-side. But what I want is to overlap the two images. Any help appreciated or you can PM me. Thanks ....

Here's one I did in about 45 secs, although I don't have a program to crop the coin in a circle and I'm too lazy to use the lasso tool. It could obviously be made to look better. This one was saved as .emf by default, but you can set it to any format.

Edit: Forgot attatchment

Yes Hayden -- that's what I'm talking about. I understand about layering and making one the background and then move the other image over. I do that in doing overlays. So then to overlap circle images (coins) I need to crop the image of the coin (lets say the obverse) in a circle fashion. Is that what I need to do? All the crops (trim) I see is rect but not circle.

I sent you a PM so we want bug everybody out here in the forums. Thanks ....

Pardon any grammer and spelling mistakes:

ok here's what you do:

First you'll have your orginal image open, and then click on the elliptical tool(a circle with a arrow pointing to the bottom right). Select the cirle in the top menu that opens when you clicked on the button. You shouldn't have to mess with any of the settings, but just in case they were changed I keep the feather on 0px,check mark anti-aliased and set the mode to fixed size. Play around with the width and height till you find the exact pixel dimensions that will fit your coin. It may take a while but soon you'll have the pixels for each denomination figured out. As you probably know the width and the height must have the same dimensions in order to be a perfect circle. Once you have the coin within the circle right click and then select "layer via copy" in the menu. Now on the menu on the bottom right side you will see the layer box. click on the background and then click on the trash can above to delete this layer. Now you are left with just the coin,I use this stage to do all editing except resizing the image. So you can rotate it,adjust the colors, whatever you want it to do. No push CRTL-N to open a new canvas. You want your pixel dimension for this new window to be slightly large than the pixel dimensions of the coin which you just did. For example if the coin is 1540x1540 I would type in the canvas size as 1550x1550. Don't put any background on this canvas. Now go back to the coin image and push CRTL-A to select the image and CRTL-C to copy it. Now go on to the blank canvas and push CRTL-V to paste the coin image. In this stage you can resize the image to the size you want it. Say 450x450. Now repeat the above steps for whatever other coins you are planning on putting on the final image. Now when you have this all completed you will make a new canvas which is going to be the final image. Set the pixel dimensions to the intended size and then add the background to the image, which I assume will just be the color white or whatever you've intended. Now you can begin pasting the coin images onto the canvas and move them around into the intended positions. If you decide later on that you want one coin above another just go over to the layers menu on the bottom right and click and drag that layer above or below the desired layer you want it to be above. I recomend that you start with a large canvas, larger than what the final image will be and then once you've completed your editing you can crop out the final image. I usually save my pictures in standard JPEG at 8-10 compression but I know that everyone has their own preferences.

Hopefully this will help you with your editing but if you have any more questions just let me know.

Actually, I thought you might be referring to the 2005 CA 25c. If you recall, you stated that, to your knowledge, there have been no confirmed cases of doubling on any States Quarters.

I thought you had said it was machine doubling? Of course,if it wasn't you'd be the one to find the first double die... thumbsup2.gif

No, I said that I thought it appeared to be tilted hub doubling.

I'm getting to examine them right?

Natch! If I'm correct, I hope this time NN will print your story. Besides, I want to see you do more of the magic with your overlays. I have two CAL's that I suspect of doubling and I will send a "normal" example for comparison. I probably won't be able to put them in the mail until next week. I don't want to give you a specific date so Hayden won't know which mail truck to hijack.

"I hope this time NN will print your story."

I only recently found out what happened about the article I submitted. I was talking with Dave and I mentioned to him about the article. He said, "What article?" I explained what it was about and he had no idea. To make a long story short -- we both backtracked in time to when I submitted that article. This was at the time they (NN and all the staff) switched to new computers along with new e-mail addresses. The article I e-mailed along with the photos unfortunately hit at the time they were switching and it (the article) -- for lack of better words -- dropped between the cracks. I'm going to re-submit the article and I still have all the photos. Besides -- the article is still timely and informative for readers.

So -- that's what happened.
