Does this NGC grade seem appropriate to you?

These clearly aren't my area, but it has a decent liberty and facial features and on the reverse solid split lines on the III, so VF30 seems OK to me.

30 seems OK to me. There may be some market grading going on here as the 1887 is a key date for the series - only 5000 business strikes, less than 3000 proofs. Otherwise, why bother submitting such a well-worn coin?

Edited to change my mind. Just looked at ANA standards for this piece. 30's too high even for market grading. Still, it's a decent coin for someone putting together a date set.

There's great detail left on the coin, and a 30 does not seem out of the question on that basis. The hit in the field in the lower reverse should have some bearing. I'd call it a comfortable 25.
