Did ANACS overgrade this coin?

Au slider maybe?

I've looked at a lot of these over the past couple of years, and the copper-nickel Indians tend to be weakly struck, expecially around the temple area and at the tips of the feathers, so it could very well be an MS 60.

I don’t see any wear either but there is no eye appeal to me, this coin is just a dog.

Greg, fugly?

MS60's by definition are ugly coins.

Fugly = contraction of f**king ugly.

Just checking, and yes most MS60s are most fugly. thumbsup2.gif

MS-60 is supposed to represent the lowest-quality, ugliest UNC coin possible. The coin in question certainly qualifies! My guess is it's been overdipped, but toned back. It would make for an ideal Dansco coin!

My opinion of 58 is a little different. Typically, the 58's I see are actually very pleasing coins that would probably go 64 if not for the slightest rub.

I've seen alot worse strikes on CN cents. I think what holds this coin back is the presence of hairlines and the lack of luster, as well as the rather spotty color.

In answer to your original question -- I agree with ANACS grade.

To me -- a 58 is like a 64 but has slight rub on the high points. I would prefer to have a 58 coin as compared to a 60, 61, or 62 grade.

In fact -- if you check out page 318 in the CPG Guide I discovered the 1956 nickel FS-035.6 illustrated at the bottom of the page. The photo in the book is of my coin. I sent that coin to ANACS and it came back AU-58. It does have very slight rub on the high points but otherwise was a beautiful coin. For the heck of it -- I cracked the coin out and re-sent it to ANACS. This time it came back an MS-64!!!!!
