1578 Germany (Saxony) Taler in MS63

This is a coin I lucked into. At the NYINC show a dealer had just picked up this coin from an auction and showed it to me. It was the only coin he won in the auction. It blew me away!

 

I believe it features Archduke August.

 

It's got very nice deep blue toning on the obverse that is somewhat vibrant once it gets under the light.

August was just a regular old Duke but held other titles.

 

The legends translate as:

August Duke of Saxony, Arch Chancellor and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire.

 

He was the senior prince in teh eastern half of the Empire and acted as Vicar of the East when the imperial throne was vacant.

Hmmmmm, I thought it said:

 

Augustus "by the grace of God" ( the D.G. = dei gratia ) Duke of Saxony.

 

Oh well, just musing.
