What's with this modern?

I like constructive criticism. I’m new to the Chat Board here and somewhat unfamiliar with identifying originally toned coinage so I wanted to post this Eagle. This is the first and only photo I have taken and the only adjustments were crop and resize. It looks different from every angle, even better in hand. So what do you think of this Eagle? NT or AT ?

I agree, but what makes it more intriguing is that the toning to the right of the "B" in LIBERTY makes the edge of the flag look like the head of a duck..........and this isn't coming from some quackpot.

Coins like this always test the boundary between AT and NT. Whatever pleases you, pleases you.

Hey, Chris, that's a good observation! I don't think you're a quackpot . . . the Mint changed Weinman's design ever so slightly for the SAE based on this photo of the flag flying above the Capitol.

Edited to add: BTW, Spider, if I didn't already say this, welcome to the boards. hi.gif If that's your first coin photo ever, you have tremendous talent, and I look foward to seeing more of your images as you continue to experiment with technique.

A DUCK ... A DISCOVERY... Variety D for Duck? 893whatthe.gif

I have it out scheduled to send in to see if it will grade.

Testing the boundaries I agree. Like in suspicious, or artificial acceleration?

First photo of this coin. Thanks!

If this were a 90% silver coin then it would almost certainly be AT, especially for a piece only 14 years old. However, on these 99.9% silver bullion pieces the blue and purple toning pattern is much more common because silver naturally tones in blue, violet and black hues and does so quite quickly without the copper mixed in.

Having said that, I don't care for the eye appeal and would expect that if I were running a grading service that I would give it AT and send it back in a bag.

Thanks for your input...While I don’t care to have a whole set of them, I like the eye appeal of this one. Check this ebay auction out and keep in mind I didn’t buy this one because I thought it would bring a premium

No, I don't think so. The one you've shown is a mallard and the one on the SAE looks like a wood duck. Either that or it's what is left of the eagle's lunch. 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif

A little more description on this modern:

Shimmering aqua blue, purple, plum, mauve, and bronze with the center most part being the bronze fading outward to the edges like a hologram, a real devil to photograph accurately. And making it all that more special to me, the underlying surface ( a solid MS 69 ) hasn’t a tick of a place on it and the colorful coating is virtually uninterrupted. The reverse is the same. This is the first photo I took of this Eagle with no adjustments except for image size.

Duck or no duck I think virtually all of these silver eagle toners are "done" so to speak....you know like roast duck. 893whatthe.gif

But if you like the coin then by all means go for it if the price is right for you.

That is just an example of a fool departing with his money. All grading services let some AT examples slip through before they got wise, thereby fattening some slimebucket's wallet in the process!

Plus, it should never have been a 69* since, if dipped, the toning would be shown to have eaten into the surface somewhat. This is just another example of where TPGS's don't give a rat's behind about accurately grading a coin they are more in the market pricing category!!!! And, I stand behind my words in many, many circumstances.

p.s. I do, however, like the toning on you ASE although it would be worth a huge premium to me.
