1818 Large Cent, Very minty

28 posts in this topic

“I noticed that you don't have any large cents, yet. I'd suggest trying to pick up a Randall hoard 1818 or 1820 large cent.” Victor, a.k.a. EZ-E

Yeah, it was about a year ago when Victor made this suggestion after looking at my type set. I had just started posting here; in fact this is from the first thread I was active in. Victor’s observation about my type set was right, big lack of big cents. The seed was planted, the hunt was on…

Not that I just gotta gotta get sorta way, but something to keep mind and be ready to make a move if the right one appeared.

One of the many reasons I like J.J.Teaparty is the new purchases e-mails they send out regularly, it allows you to easily keep up with their inventory and get first crack at anything that might tickle your fancy.

A couple weeks back I’m looking at the latest installment and see the following listing under large cents;

1818 N-10. Breathtakingly beautiful! Blazing mint red fields are accented by electric blue, violet and pale orange toning. Well struck. Dazzling cartwheel effect. Sure to please! NGC MS-64BN

After reading that I just had to go the J.J.Teaparty web site and check this out, below is their photo of this “breathtakingly beauty”

O.K., the hook is now firmly set deep in my throat and I’m chomping down hard on the old steel leader like it is a gotta gotta have it moment. But wait… It’s Friday night and J.J.T. only has store hours on Saturday, I won’t be able to talk to Gail or Liz about this coin until Monday morning, it could be gone by then!

Of course it was still there, but not for long. Talked to Liz on Monday and the 1818 cent was on its way that afternoon.

When the coin arrived I couldn’t tear though the envelope quick enough, after all I was told that this coin was breathtakingly beautiful with dazzling cartwheel luster, this I had to see. I looked, I saw, I knew there was the perfect coin for my collection, Liz didn’t over hype this coin one bit, I feel that it is all of what it was said to be and more. Sure, you can say I’m pleased.

The pics below show the color very accurately but don’t come close to depth of the luster; in hand the eye appeal is fantastic. The reverse is rotated 18 degrees as pictured.

Great coin. Exquisite. More than exquisite!!

I'm drooling all over my wife beater.

I'm going to have to get me a Randall hoard coin.

As far as JJ Teaparty goes, I'm glad you had a good experience.

Not everyone does.

Paul, WONDERFUL pickup! I am thrilled that another collector has latched on to the wonder of the Randall coins. I believe that EVERY serious collector, whether he collects copper or not, should own a Randall coin. They are available, affordable, and historic in every numismatic sense.

Here are some I've owned in years past:

Some days I really resent the server here at work blocking image hosting sites. I will take a look when I get home though.

I've been wanting to pick up one of the Randall coins for a while now but I haven't made it a priority. I think it is almost a requirement for me since my name is Randall. I wonder if I can get someone to give me a discount because of that. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

James, I've seen yours before and I really love the cracks on the 1820 coins. acclaim.gif

James, those are some awesome cents you have, err had there. 893applaud-thumb.gif893applaud-thumb.gif

I love the color of the 1817, and the lusters on your 1820’s are fantastic. cloud9.gif

Looks like the mint was having a lot of trouble with large die cracks in those days, are there other years with the circular cracking like the 1818 and 1820 varieties shown in this thread? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Hey, Rex-Cat, watch that guy, I hear that he's baaaad news. crazy.gif

Very nice acquisition there! I picked mine up a couple of years ago at a show in the Tacoma Dome. (Oldtrader3 was there with me). I was actually on the hunt for a Bust Dime for my 7070 but could only find dogs, then, I saw the 1820 Randall Cent. It was love at first site! The dealer wanted $625 for it but unbiddingly, he went down to $550. It is a MS63 RB but would probably grade Brown and maybe even to 64. Since I made this purchase, copper prices have going crazy in the "Coin Values" guide. So, you are very fortunate to get this coin at such a reasonable price!

I can understand the excitement and anticipation of getting that one coin that you want but are hindered by weekend hours! I noted a PR64 cameo 1885 SL Quarter on Pinacles website 2 or 3 years ago and fell in love with it immediately! (This was actually my first classic proof type coin) I left a message on Saturday and was so happy that it was reserved for me. This is still one of my favorite coins! Totally original, champagne toning, stong contrast, no hairlines at all. There is a staple scratch that is barely noticeable that limits the grade, o/w it would be easily a 67 or better. I gave $925 for it at the time, now, lesser specimens of the same grade are selling for $1425. Timing is indeed everything.

p.s. I think that Lucille inspired me to pick up a Canon digital camera like she has. Soooo, keep an eye out for some pix on the way!

Hey EZ,

I was wondering when you’d show up. Good story, I really enjoy both the telling and the reading of coin conquests.

Can’t wait to start to see your type set, get clicking! Chop! Chop! headbang.gif

Chop! Chop!

Well, I finally did it! I just ordered a Canon PowerShot Pro1 8.0 with the supermacro mode and a tripod. But, darnit! I forgot to order OTT lights. Well, I guess that I'm back to shopping.

Hopefully, this is as easy as Lucille said. We'll see. Looking forward to sharing!

That's a lovely piece! Aren't the Randall Hoard coins terrific? Even if you go a little higher in grade you can snag what I consider a value as my 1820 in MS66BN was only about $1500, though that was three years ago.

Nice purchase! thumbsup2.gif893applaud-thumb.gif
